It will become unlimited if:
* You use an external payment source to buy it directly
* You use an external payment source to buy wallet balance (unlimits account)
* You use a PHYSICAL Steam gift card to redeem wallet balance (unlimits account)

It will NOT become unlimited if:
* You use a DIGITAL Steam gift card which can only be gifted by a friend
* Your friend purchases it for you then gifts it to you (no matter the payment method)

If you spent $5 USD, or equivalent answer is yes, and doesn't have to be buying prime, buying games, software, DLC, or in-game microtransactions counts as well as all have to do is spend at least $5 USD or equivalent on the account, and it becomes unlimited.
