Steam is stopping windows 7-8 support
Steam has added a countdown to windows 7-8 which says "Windows 7-8 support will be ended in (number) days"
This is very bad because some people do not have access to windows 10 and because Steam is the largest (and best) gameshop to buy games from and most people have their games bought from steam, they will lose all their favourite games.
With the amount of money that Steam gets from people buying games, they can definitely make a workaround for Chromium
What Steam is doing is lazy and careless

You can still use Linux which is free.

This has been known and talked about for weeks now. Nothing new. And we already have dozens of threads about it.

It won't change anything.

Steam dropped support for Windows 98
Steam dropped support for Windows ME
Steam dropped support for Windows 2000
Steam dropped support for Windows Windows XP

Why do you think Windows 7 and Windows 8 will be any different? Both are at least 10 years old. Let them rest.

windows 10 is not wanted ..neither is linux. why is that so hard to fathom ?
geez jehova's witness much ?

the problem isn't the dropped support
the issue lies in having our curent machines still play at least the instaled games
until such time the machine breaks or we move on .....

"it's about freedom maaaaaaan" ^^

You can tell the steam client to stop downloading and installing updates. That way, you will be able to play your games on Windows 7 as you have payed for.

Some XP users still use steam that way.

You can create the following file in your Steam folder:
Steam.cfg
and put inside the following: BootStrapperInhibitAll=Enable

And then in future buy DRM free versions from GOG.
Long live Windows 7

If Steam does not want our business, then be it.

I mean, while the constant back and forth in these threads is entertaining, the simple truth is that support is gonna end. Most users WILL update their OS. The few remaining holdouts will find a workaround or stop using steam. These threads will fade into obscurity, and no one will talk about it after early 2024 until we have to do this again with windows 10/11.

This is very bad because some people do not have access to windows 10 ..

I need to mention, everybody has access to Windows 10, and even completely for free.

So:

There are literally NO ANY COSTS to upgrade your so powerful machine to Windows 10.

You can upgrade your Windows 7/8/8.1 machine for free without any charges to Windows 10, and if your machine is Windows 11 compatible, even "for free" to upgrade to Windows 11.

Once upgraded, your Windows 7/8/8.1 license key is permanently converted. For Free!

Win 10

Win 11

Whenever you upgraded successfully, you can even clean install your OS afterwards with your converted Windows 7/8/8.1 license key:

Windows 10/11 Clean Installation Process[www.microsoft.com]

Process is really easy. All you need is an empty 8 GB USB stick. Check that link which I given above. A clear tutorial. Get Windows 11 Media Creation Tool. That link is also on that page.

Once your USB is ready and set with all stuff followed by that tutorial, restart your machine by holding down the SHIFT key to enter the install/recovery menu which is shown at 02:40.

Good luck!

People using Windows 7 do not want Windows 10 and above. The reason are the design decissions of Microsoft targetting tablets and going the data selling route from Windows 8 onward.

I would not take Windows 10 even if Microsoft would pay me a hungred bucks a month for my data.

Your loss, Linux is your only choice. Nobody's gonna hear your help once the new year party is over.

I have a Win 10 laptop and Win 7 desktop. While I still can play games on my laptop, I prefer to play older/weaker games on my desktop. And installing Win 10 here is out of the question, its a family computer, not just I use it, and they prefer Win 7 over 10. Hardware-wise I think it would lag with Win 10. It is also overall more stable than Win 10 tbh.

Would be a shame if they made my desktop unable to play Steam games. Can they at least provide a middle ground, like having a very simple client available for older systems, or still able to play as long as logged in to browser?

It's also the same solution Instagram implemented on my old phone I rarely use. They no longer support my version of software, but the Instagram Lite works fine and has all the basics like posts and DMs.

Valve should really consider this. Tbh I only need a working ingame browser and a screenshot uploader. Anything else can be done via browser.

A Steam "Lite" Edition has ever been missed. A semi-lite option already exists.

Steam > View > Small Mode

This would be neat and a compatible layer for all and everything, but even this "small mode" uses all resources in background, lol.
