Steam keeps logging me back in....
I'm done for the night and have logged out of steam, and every few minutes it keeps LOGGING BACK IN! What's up with that? This is a new issue [within the last few days] that is really annoying because it also keeps popping my friends list back up on the screen. If this keeps up, I just won't leave steam running....

try using task manager and close it from there best of luck
It shut down just fine when I told it to exit. That's not the problem. The problem was [may still be] that when I leave the client up [so it updates things automagically] but stay "Signed Out of Friends & Chat" it logs back in every 5 minutes or so, and my Friends List repopulates. I have changed settings to NOT notify me when friends come online and go offline, and NOT to login Automatically when I start steam. We'll have to see if that helps. I shut it down last night before I went to bed - I'll monitor it's behavior for a while and see what happens tonight.

I have the same problem. I think it started to appear after Steams most recent big update.
I already have it set up with no automatic login on start and no notifications when friends come online, but it still logs me into my friends at seemingly random intervals.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

Try using task manager and close it. It should work.
Yeah....until I log in it stays logged out. Then, once I log in, it won't stay "logged out" but keeps coming back to the Logged In state. I have to shut it down and restart it to leave it "running but logged out." And yes...this has been since the last update....and continues to this point.
The problem with NOT having it running is that updates don't occur while my computer is idle all day and night, so if steam isn't running, most of the games say "installing updates" if I haven't played them for a few days. It's annoying as hell - this used to work fine.

I haven't initially noticed it, but the version causing problems is just a beta which you can opt out of. After I did that everything was fine again. They'll probably fix it when that version goes live.
