How to force update workshop content?
Apparently something I downloaded through the workshop didn't download correctly and the author of the mod said that in order to fix the problem I need to manually unsubscribe and resubscribe to get steam to update it. I've had issues with this sort of stuff with the steam workshop before and it's almost always a pain in the ass to get steam to actually get rid of the downloaded files and force download the updated ones. Is there a way to force steam to delete and redownload all of my workshop content?
(yes, I know it's supposed to be done automatically, it just doesn't work reliably for some games and I've spent cumulative hours faffing about trying to get it to reacquire my mods)

If you unsub and then re-subscibe then it will download the latest version of the mod assuming it hasn't already updated itself. The problem is that mod authors don't update their mods to correlate with the latest version of the game and account for any changes there, so the mods become outdated by virtue of that rather than it being a case of Steam not updating them because that's not the case.

having done that, I can say with confidence that isn't what happens. I've been forced to go into the steam workshop folder and manually go in and delete the files then inch steam through re-downloading each individual mod.

Even if it was however, that would still require users go through each mod they're subscribed to individually just to update their mod list.

I have over 170 active mods and don't have this issue with any of my games. They all update accordingly, I don't have to delve into any folders or even re-subscribe.

The most common reason is mod authors not updating their mods. It's that simple and that's why you should only download content that doesn't conflict, is regularly updated and from a trusted workshop source. Each mod outlines when it was last updated on the workshop page and then it's down to the uploader to state whether it's compatible with the current game version. Some creators get into such a mess with files that it does cause issues with overlapping and even conflicts with their own content.

You can always ask in the game forum and every mod has it's own discussion section and comments to communicate with the uploader. If a mod is updated which is outlined on the workshop page and you're having to sift through and remove files then that is simply a testament to the mod author making a pickle of their own creation.

mate I literally develop software, I know people can just, not update their ♥♥♥♥. But when I have had to spend hours or potentially even days of my life faffing about with steam to get it to redownload mods, I'm going to call ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ when you say "oh just unsub and resub" because I've done that, and while it does work a decent chunk of the time, it very much does not work 100% of the time.

And, again, even if it DID, that's still not an acceptable solution since it requires users go through each and every one of their mods by hand to resubscribe to them.

Funny how it's always the self-proclaimed industry professionals that have difficulty within their own field - bit like how all these cyber security experts get fleeced with common malware:lunar2019laughingpig:

I've given you all the reasons as to why this happens and the solutions. Doesn't look live you've read or understood a thing if you're fixated on unsubbing and re-subbing which is the obvious solution to downloading the latest mod version. Like I said, contact the mod authors to find out if their mod is compatible with the latest game version and if there are any potential conflicts. Also don't download content that leaves residual stacking of files behind. This is literally modding 101.

Sounds like you've bloated your game with mods and now can't control what you have installed. Amateur error for a 'software engineer':lunar2019grinningpig:

Hey mate, your a mechanic right, okay, please fix my car. You can't look at the engine though, and you still have to do the rest of your daily duties, go through your life, etc. So I want you to - during your own freetime - reverse engineer the entire car so that it can replicate the niche problem exactly, fix that problem, make a new version of the car with the problem fixed, and constantly keep it running for the rest of your life. You know, instead of just seeing if the car already has a fix to the problem provided by the manufacturer who already has all this information and frankly should have already provided a manual way to fix the problem quickly and easily anyways.

Steam is a proprietary piece of software, how the ♥♥♥♥ would I be able to fix it? This is genuinely like just telling a NASA employee that "oh did you hear how SpaceX's Starship rocket blew up?" "no, what happened?" "That's what I'm asking you, I already told you everything you need to know please rebuild the entire rocket with the problem fixed in your own freetime".

I didn't even know self awareness COULD go into the negatives but I guess you learn something new everyday.

I've given you every reason as to why this happens and every solution to explore and what channels to contact the mod authors through. It really isn't difficult and you should know all this being a software extraordinaire. Your analogy just demonstrates that you know you are the only one that can fix this so crack on I'd say.

I don't need to contact the mod authors mate, I can see when the mod was updated on steam, the mod is up to date. The issue isn't the mod not being up to date, it is steam that is refusing to redownload it. You keep trying to shift the blame onto the mod authors despite me explaining this fact repeatedly and clearly. I have already directly contacted them, they said to get steam to redownload it, and since this is a problem I've already had to deal with before, I was looking to see if there was a way to do it that wasn't tedious as ♥♥♥♥. You however keep trying to explain basic software principles while seemingly not understanding the basic principle of "a single person cannot magically fix problems in an entirely proprietary application they have literally zero internal knowledge of because such knowledge is explicitly hidden from them by virtue of it being a closed source project" yourself.

Tried verifying game integrity files? That is in steam properties of installed game. Seems to re-download anything damaged for me.

Was just going to say saving a collection before unsubscribing will probably save tou a ton of time cuz you can just resub all and probably keep your LO
Epix Jun 22 @ 5:40am
Can confirm this is still happening, Can't play a bannerlord overhaul mod due to some workshop items not updating to their latest build when unsubscribing and resubscribing. I've also verified integrity of the game files. Now I'm at the point of going through the steam files to fully delete then resubscribe to the mods and see if that updates them to the latest version.
Epix Jun 22 @ 6:00am
Unsubscribing would simply not remove the mods from the game files, was watching the file folder and only a few of my mods actually removed themself. Everything I needed to be updated though would not. Since it wouldn't be removed it wouldn't update when I resubscribed. Deleted them from my files and now re-installing. It'll proabably work now once it's done, but as was disscussed before in here, It shouldn't be like this.

this is not a solution
its a workaround that can ♥♥♥♥ with mod settings/order and other stuff

valve needs to add an option to force-check for workshop updates
