Steam shuts down after sleep mode
I've had this issue going on when my computer gets put into sleep mode for the night and then active again on the next morning Steam is completely closed out (not even a process for it is running). When I try to open the client the processes load but not steam itself.

It didn't start doing this until yesterday (March 19th). At that time I tried:
• Ending Processes and reloading Steam (didn't work)
• Logged out of my Windows User profile to reload the processes (didn't work)
• Reinstalled Steam (didn't work)
• Restarted the computer (did work)

Today it did it again where it came out of sleep and Steam was completely shut down and wouldn't boot up. Restarted the computer only and it did load up... but I don't want to have to keep doing that every single day just to get it to start back up.

Is there something else I can do?

BTW, yes my system is fully updated and yes Steam is updated (which I think was part of the issue at first (it kept asking to be updated when it was)

Do you have Steam startup with windows?
Is it on an external drive?

Yes Steam is set to start up with windows.
No it's not on an external drive.

I haven't had any problems with it until yesterday morning.

Did you disable startup with Windows?
It has been known to cause issues with the client.

I have the same issue... I tried to kill the process, to uninstall/reinstall steam, to disable graphic acceleration parameter, nothing works... The only way to have steam functional is to reboot :milsonsad:

(Lenovo Legion 5 on Windows 11)

Mine did start working again after a while. I think the issue was that one update that kept reappearing even though Steam did update. Although I'll keep an eye on it to see if it happens again

Okay so I have turned off having steam launch at start up... unfortunately this didn't solve the problem as after a certain amount of time my Steam decided to stop working (tried to open it and it wouldn't show up even after ending the processes)

I think i did see a post somewhere with network protocoll not work as intended after sleep mode, and ofc i cant recall other then that , because now its a hibernation issue, and many pc user dont even do that. i only mention this, if other fall over the post or whatever it was i read it and might know this.

it was like a protocoll was cut off then you sleep and then your pc was wake up again things look like ity was connected, laptop user can try repaire connect they know this issue from roming hotspot, and so can desktop pc, they just dont think orhave learn such this is well know by laptop user that change hotspot.

and i dont recall if there was a solution on it. other then ofc fix or reboot pc ( cold boot ) if you dont know what im talking about im sure other will help you.

pc.
just so you know steam is not resposible for your pc sleepmode issue. ( its seen as you cut the connection, what prevent you from exit steam, then sleep mode, you can ask steam for exit steam then idle option, maybe they will do that but now its a suggestion issue and require steam devs to make code for it, and who said they will do this or can get it to work )

this can get consequence what if you are in a game and walk away from it afk, now steam crash your games, there is alot of issue with this. this might not be as simple as it sounds.

Just remember OP that most fixes start (and ends) with SFC Scan Tool - the most simplest of fixes for various issues pertaining malfunctioning applications, MS Store, system files, search bar, etc...

Any luck getting this resolved? This has been happening to me for about a month. I'll put my PC to sleep with Steam working just fine. When I wake up my computer, Steam is closed and when I go to start it again, it shows that it's running in Task Manager but the Steam icon is missing from the system tray and it's not on my taskbar either. It's like it's running in the background but I can't interact with it. The only way to fix it is by restarting my PC which is a pain.

I've been closing steam completely now before closing my laptop and it going to sleep. Sadly there doesn't seem to be a fix to this problem other than keeping the computer from going to sleep.

Take it up with MS then, steam dont have a sleep mode, this is way more complicated then other part of sleep mode is the cause, and write here with sleepmode wont fix a thing, let MS look at it, im sure they know what this is. sense they itroduce it way back at old outdate OS.

( the consequence off this require MS to tell steam app to exit then enter sleep mode or shut it down, if MS think this is a steam problem then let them deal with steam. )

feel free to ask steam support if they can make it so, only steam devs support can know if this is as simple as it sounds other DL issue and keep alive issue with this is seen before.

almost look like same old tech issue with modem disconnect or trigger way with hang-up, but im not so so this is the way to do it.

Onlu you that use it can make steam ticket about it, i doubt steam support even read here same goes with MS thats use and made it way back.

You have no idea what you're talking about.

I'm also having this issue - exactly the same symptoms. It's not a "Microsoft Issue" (or at least, an issue that Microsoft is responsible for). If a single application cannot resume functioning after sleep mode then it is an application issue. Applications need to be able to handle such things.

I've tried reinstalling Steam, killing processes/subprocesses, clearing Steam cache, running as administrator, turning off run-at-startup, scan tools, verifying file integrity, turning off overclocking, anti-virus, etc. etc.

I have Windows 11. If I kill the processes/subprocesses, it shows the updating prompt but then doesn't launch the application GUI after that.

Note for others running into this: I've found that when Steam won't start after waking from sleep, going into sleep mode again and waking it back up again will 'fix' it and I'm able to open it again.
