Steam thinks my avatar is a question mark

Since I updated the client today, in the Activity tab on a game's screen, where it says "X achieved" and shows achievements earned today, yestarday, screenshots taken and so on, Steam shows me with a "?" avatar. If I click on that, it takes me to my profile and there my avatar is all good. Is this another of the problems caused by this new update? I realize it's a minor issue for most people, I'm just curious if I'm the only one experiencing that.

I think they fixed the achievement thing and broke the pfp. Sounds about right for Steam.

Ah, I see, thank you. Weird thing is, my friend's client seems unaffected by that, his avatar displays as usual. But if it's a server thing, I suppose all we can do is wait it out. Weird day for Steam today.

Same thing has started happening here today. I'm seeing a question mark instead of my usual avatar within the Steam client.

What's weird, once I switched from being hidden to online, my avatar started displaying correctly again. Friends activity, also gone along with my avatar, returned as well. I need to test this further, maybe it's some kind of weird new function? Or just server issues, as Hotsauce says.

Okay, I tested it - turned offline again (or just hidden), closed Steam client, opened it up again. While hidden, my avatar is a question mark again. So what, now I have to be online to see my own avatar and my friends achievements on the game's page in library? That would be absurd.

Absurd yes, but it appears to be the case unfortunately. One month on and my own was still showing as a question mark. Just messed around with the settings and it looks like you have to be signed in to friends and chat for your avatar to show up now. Second I sign out it goes back to ??????.

Yup, same here, apparently that's how it works now. I still think it's rather silly, but I guess we have to get used to it.

Wow, I thought I was the only one with this profile image problem, I googled my mind out but didnt find anything related until I stumbled upon this thread.
Same as OP, with all my own game activity in all games, gaining achievements, starting a game, earning a card, whatever - profile image is a question mark.
But in top right I can see my profile image, mobile app, browser everywhere but my own game activity.
But just like OP when I go online the image shows up under all activity, but as soon as I sign out it reverts to the question mark.
When will this be fixed? Its been like this for a month or so.

Well, with the new updated UI it seems this issue is finally resolved for me.

This happens regularly and is especially prevalent on Tuesdays (maintenance day). It is a server issue, as already stated, or more accurately a CDN issue. It will pass, it always does.
