Y button not always registering on Steam Deck

I am having issues with my Y button not registering, all the other face buttons and triggers etc all work fine but I’m getting intermittent presses or none at all with the Y button. Is there anything I can do?

Could simply be a failing controller/button. Try another one to see if the same happens.

Sorry I forgot to mention this is on the Steam Deck itself, not a third party controller

I've had the exact same issue with my deck. I'm sure it's a software issue rather that a dodgy button.
It started for me (twice now) after trying beta os instead of stable. The Y button would stop registering. Also when in desktop mode, it would work first of all sometimes but then go constantly on (registering as an f keyboard input) once the steam (and sometimes the 3 dot button) button was pressed.
Have you also tried the beta os? If so try yours in desktop mode to see if the same happens.
To fix this issue, I've spent hours trying all sorts of things and finally figured out a fix.
Unfortunately this means a factory reset of the Deck, once that's finished, start up, log in, and go to game mode and try the y button, if still not working, go into desktop mode, then back into game mode, and it should now be fixed, just stay away from the beta os for now.
(Please note that simply going back to stable doesn't fix this at all)

I have been having the same issue for the past couple of months. I've done a bunch of troubleshooting including factory reset, using different versions of the OS, and cleaning the button (looking for debris). I have not been able to get the button register. I am taking the device apart this weekend, I suspect it's a faulty connection. Will update if I am able to resolve the issue

I saw my local repair shop posted on facebook about they fixed their customer that have same problem with the Y button. Maybe it is caused by the faulty connection.

I was able to resolve this issue by replacing the action button rubber membrane and action buttons. I suspect it was a faulty connection, but it was a $20 fix (materials plus additional tools) and an hour of time thanks to ifixit. Also installed a new backplate.

Good for you. I'm gonna try to clean the face button board. Waiting for my isopropyl to arrive
