Cannot Install SteamVR due to "not enough space".
I'm trying to do a fresh install of SteamVR on a 2TB SSD and I am getting this error. I have tried all the fixes mentioned in earlier posts and have not solved the problem. Is there a problem happening right now that isn't just me? Does anyone want to give me some options that I might have not tried yet?

steam is not responsible for you dont have enough free space and what you have on harddisk.

check dl folder fo all them app and update app you dont need anymore, uninstall games you wont play ever. buy more disk , buy new pc maybe , so many option.

buy external disk to store files that seen as media play only and dont need to be on internal disk,

fact is talk with a IT educate person can help you, none here going to tell you what to delete and fix whatever missing space,

ccleaner can not fix or clean up in 100gb, there is not so many teamporary files on the system

check windows clean under advanced option, but i doubt you can fetch 100gb or TB as the many games has, average game install today is soon 100gb per game, some goes even past that.

be happy someone will bother reply to what is seen as user own problem. soon no one will.

The problem is that I have space and the app is telling me that I don't. I have 1.7tb of space and the app is 5gb. Everything else installs just fine, the only problem is with SteamVR.

try check disk, in the windows system somehow it see system disk maybe with a issue.
or it use boot disk if you know what im talking about as mistake, doing unpacking that is rare but seen before.

atleast you explan better now its a diffrent direction and check of free space failed from app or system that cause this.

ps.
try the old odd trick run as admin on the installer to see if that help.

yeah i thougth so, a total diffrent issue, ( do note install app from inside a zip file if Install SteamVR install exe is that i doubt steam do such mistake ) but i cant see if you have packed the files most user dont do that anymore. ) try move the file to the disk you want to install it on, im just say install and what disk its check can be coded in the installer.
and some old appinsdtall dont like GPT disk thats 4TB+ disk now once it was 2TB on old pc.

and i doubt its that at all, but install from DL folder not desktop, MS dont like things unpack at windows desktop , because some app dont clean up after themself.
most user do this already, so i and other dont think ppl install from desktop and can make sense if this is the case.

we have just seen other user install steam at desktop, most user dont even think that possible or should be. ( maybe not related to you, but could be )

if you solve this say so, so other steam user learn from this.

Steam will not even let me start the download part of the install so I have no files to move. I've tried all storage devices I have, two SSDs, a HDD and an external drive it says all of them do not have enough space and will not allow me to even get the files to start the install.

Do contact steam support i bet they want to know why you cant install it.
most company dont like basic install issue, and steamVR is there forever now with all them games, so i bet they want to know, what cause this at your pc.

you can try check for BIOS update and chipset driver and get lucky if thats the issue, but i cant not see how that is now a problem if it has worked before.

you might want to run ccleaner and check system for junk files and windows registration data issue for previous steamVR entry at system, but i doubt its that. but, only you know if this is a fresh OS install or why you want a fresh install of steamVR.

I submitted a ticket but I'm guessing it won't be a fast response.

do the crazy ivan, unplug all usb device and replug them again so system auto detect them again just to be sure its not another of them USB unit issue.

we have seen steam fail to start because of this, and only last idea to try go back to pc basic with only needed gear attach to figureout what is this issue and why steam wont start , i know it not that, but i bet that steamVR is on USB. ( thats why you have nothing to lose and test crazy idea )

Do check brand harddisk support page for rare issue with firmware update that needed sometime or other app that check disk status by product support page.

did you ever find a fix?

What worked for me when I had this problem was creating space in my main drive. I attempted to change my default drive, but it stayed on my C: drive. Hope this helps y'all.

So I have found an answer to this, whenever you attempt to install SteamVR, it goes onto your main drive, I had this issue just recently, and went to clear my main C: Drive like Oblongatta, it turns out that SteamVR gives the prompt "cannot change install file", forcing it to be installed on the main file, which causes you to need to clear out the main drive anyway and doesnt allow you to use any other drive you may have installed

TL:DR ; SteamVr installs on the main drive you have, meaning new space is not used because it doesn't allow you to change install location.
And to this day, he never installed VR...
