[FIXED] My Steam app closes automatically and won't reopen after waking my PC from sleep mode. Steam's processes are running in Task Manager but the client is invisible. The only fix is restarting my PC. Please help!
*****UPDATE - PROBLEM IS FIXED*****

10/11/23 - Steam support said they noticed my WLAN driver was causing an error reconnecting to Steam's servers when waking my PC from sleep sometimes. I just reinstalled Windows 10 and it fixed the problem for me. But if anyone else has this issue, maybe start with your wireless / ethernet drivers. If that doesn't work, try reinstalling Windows.

*****ORIGINAL POST*****

I've been having this issue for several months in a row now. I can't find hardly any information online about this specific problem.

Here's the basic steps to reproduce the problem:

1. PC is on and Steam client is running, working as intended. No games running, just the steam client.

2. Put PC into sleep mode, with steam app running still.

3. Come back later (whether it's an hour, or a couple days later doesn't matter) and wake PC from sleep mode.

4. Steam app is still running and functioning as intended, for now...

5. Suddenly, after maybe 30 seconds, the steam client force closes, the app icon disappears from the task bar, and the steam icon also disappears from the system tray in the bottom right hand corner. However, the Task manager shows processes for steam.exe, steam client service and steam client webhelper are all still running. The Steam client itself is nowhere to be found and cannot be interacted with at all.

6. The ONLY way to fix the issue and get steam to launch again is to either restart PC, shutdown / restart PC, or (oddly enough) put my PC to sleep again and wake it back up.

Things I've already tried:

1. Ending all steam related processes in the task manager and attempting to relaunch steam after

2. Running steam as administrator

3. Uninstalling and Reinstalling steam, twice

4. Checking services.msc for the Steam Client Service and manually restarting that service

5. Setting the Steam Client Service in services.msc to "Automatically Start"

6. Opting into Steam beta

7. Disabling hardware acceleration or hardware video decoding

8. Resetting my router

After restarting my PC, or putting it back to sleep and waking it back up, I can launch Steam and it opens immediately and works as if nothing happened. It's such an inconvenience to make up my PC, put it back to sleep, and then wake it back up again just to be able to use Steam.

Is anyone else having this issue? Because I can't seem to find any similar cases online at all.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Is google or any searc engine broken in your country, i think there is 100 of post with this, if not more. ( there is no news on the subject not already been said before. )

im just a user here, i dont work for steam , and i can also say write here wont fix it. its a user forum. any helper here can tell you this,

problem with all this is steam is online , and even if they make option with exit steam is idle or done DL , that can maybe backfire then you are afk in a game, only steam support or suggest can maybe make option as choise,

and i can also say what prevent uyou from exit steam just like any other app.
i eman i even close email app, problem is ppl let the client run at taskbar as choise, feel free to ask support or suggestion and idea forum.

dont get me wrong here maybe steam need a dont running a steam game and no DL is there then exit client within 15 minute of inactivaty, if such is possible at all.

Hi,

I've been having the exact same issue, thanks for the "sleep and wake" part of the solution, i've been restarting the pc :D

Are you still experiencing the issue?

I'm on Win11, on a Lenovo laptop that has some issues with USB SS management, as it sometimes turns off the devices that are plugged into the back ports, i'm also using a custom firewall....those are the 3 things that are different from every other device i've been using steam on so far and is the only device that this is happening on, do you by chance happen to match any of these?

USB was seen as external disk issue, im not sure what steam will do with next USB-C Generations even faster, this technologic dont go away, and never will.

Any technician can tell you that, its part of pc core or choise, its on our product board, ask steam sugeeset to see the light, in suggestion, they need to make a better support of that or test speed and have tool for check speed again and data transfer check.

just because i said this, there is a long way to make it so. ( and thats why you have suggestion, dont expect other ther see your way. ( and technical i could make post, but then i dont run games on external unit, then im not the one that need steam help.

steam has a only them with a problem can try get help or make post. you will see this in steam ticket system, do you have a problem or ticket will be closed. so as you see we cant help you.

i cn say and i stick to it, sateam has no clue what pc core build is, wishing a technologc as not recommended dont make it go away.

any technician on this planet can tell you this.

steam and MS did this to our board support product. ( removed removeable disk icon and the ways that work. ) floppy disk still allowed its the external disk logo thats the problem. ( add remove and steam word USB chain can drop from pc, not the word i will use then user has sleep mode on disk.

As i said you need techcical insight as many user has said on external disk and know what they do.

you wont fix it here. in steam user group ask suggestion & idea, they said steam devs read there.
not same as you get reply from them.

gl with it

ps.
dont expect user will help or reply on USB issue anymore. then steam has is not recommended by steam. ( i also recommeded steam to fix its client issue with them. )

I fixed mine by reinstalling Windows. I'm on Windows 10 though. Steam support got back to me and said they said an error with my WLAN driver was preventing the app from connecting to the steam servers after waking my PC from sleep for some reason, causing steam to hang. Problem is fixed now though.

This was barely coherent but anyway, I fixed my issue by reinstalling windows 10. Problem solved.
