Low free space lowers system performance overall, which extends to games. With SSDs this is less pronounced, but with SSDs specifically the closer you get to 100% full the longer write operations take. A general rule of thumb is to keep 20% of a drive free to maintain decent performance, HDD and SSD alike.

It is, but you don't have to.

It is true that the underlying storage engine (so to speak) benefits from overprovisioning, that is from keeping enough of the Flash cells free for the controller's maintenance work & spares for working cells breaking down. That maintenance part is rather essential for keeping the performance.

HOWEVER, this is done in the device itself! SSDs have long reached the point of maturity, meaning the manufacturer takes care of all of this. Your 512 GB SSD has more space, than you think it does, because it is overprovisioned from the factory.

... unless you buy the cheapest piece of Chinese crap you can find. In that case, it's safe to assume that the manufacturer didn't do their due dilligence and you have to take care. There's other reasons not to buy the cheapest crap you can though.

I presume, your laptop wasn't the cheapest piece of Chinese crap you could find?

I am not quite sure what we're getting onto here. Let's just stick with "if you don't buy the cheapest piece of Chinese crap you can find, manual overprovisionong is unnecessary".
If its not the drive with operation system on it, games usually dont need much free space.
For windows i would keep 15% free. For a 1tb drive thats also the space required to keep the drive as fast for writing as advertised.
If i remember right for samsung it was 160gb on a 1tb. If its 3 bit or more. But mainly if you write more than the "fast cache" can handle at a time.
