I just tried launching Astro Colony and opened the overlay and clicked some things, and besides a slight graphic stutter on the first, had no further problems.
- Opt in/out of Steam beta, and test.
- redownload Steam client files, head to where Steam is located, delete everything except for Steamapp folder, and steam.exe file, then once done run steam.exe to check if issue gone.
- If using HDD, defrag it, it could be that issue.
- If you're using any listen to yourself software, or windows setting to hear yourself on mic, or using mixer to listen to another audio source on same audio channel ensure that not causing the problem.
- If nothing else works test by disable Steam overlay to see if it issue goes away, if the issue still there then it's not the Steam overlay, it's something else.
Happens on all games, started when steam updated to the new ui, i went to the beta to see if it would stop but its still happening.
steam is installed on a ssd, already reinstalled steam once just to make sure, didn't fix it
If i disable steam overlay it goes away since it only happens when i open the overlay, if i'm just playing a game everything is fine until i open the overlay and chat to somebody, when i close it it goes back to normal which doesn't sound like a huge issue, but when i'm listening to some music it gets annoying really quick,
i changed many audio settings to see if it would make a difference but nothing seems to fix it, since it happened when steam updated the ui i guess i just have to wait for them to fix it, but since it seems to be a rare issue i doubt that it'l happen anytime soon.
no solution yet?
Thanks for this, this pointed me in the right direction and enabled me to remove some symptoms of the specific issue I am experiencing! However, your advice is only half correct for the current Steam version.
I realise your comment is over a year old, so potentially it has been outdated by Steam updates, however I wanted to update this thread with the current location and specific setting (December 2024), in case anybody is still having this problem. See below:
1. Click 'Steam' in top left of application.
2. Click 'Settings' from drop-down list.
3. Click 'Interface' (from list on left-hand side of pop-up window).
4. Scroll down to 'Enable GPU accelerated rendering in web views' - disable this setting.
You will then be prompted to restart Steam. Do so. The overlay audio crackling issue should be removed.
In addition to this, the issue I was experiencing went a step further; I had audio crackling only when the overlay was open/displaying on my screen (following above steps fixed this). However, the crackling was constant (regardless of whether the overlay was open/displaying or not) when I enabled the Steam in-game recording tool. The above steps only fixed the former, not the latter for me.
Does anyone else also have the same audio issue when using the Discord overlay or Discord screen share options? The Steam overlay only causes this same audio issue, the Discord items disable the audio and cause consistent video and input stutters that are about .25-.5 seconds long.
