Steam takes over controller, doesn't let me use it on Epic Games
This really frustrates me, I have a DualSense controller and I often play Rocket League on Epic Games since it isn't on Steam anymore, I always have Steam open in the background because I mainly play Spider-Man. Every time I open Rocket Leauge with my controller on BT, it doesn't work because Steam is open and so I have to hold the PS button for 10 seconds, close Rocket League and Epic, close Steam, open Epic, and Rocket League, hold the PS button for 5-10 seconds for pairing, and sometimes it still doesn't work so I have to do it again.
I was wondering if there was a way to not let Steam take over the controller when no Steam games are running.

I don't want to use emulators, it's just as tedious as having to constantly reboot programs. I have tried opening Epic Games as a non-steam game, it just isn't convenient for me and registers the controller as an Xbox One.

I already know someone is gonna tell me to play wired because it's easier to disconnect and reconnect, but I just like playing wirelessly

Contact That Brand game controll, let them deal with steam if they can proof what you are saying.

because windows system and what is attached to it, and im not so sure if this is just because steam is open, what prevent you from have all online client open, there are many other then just steam and epic games here.

this is why Brand controll should know this, maybe they have a mistake in the way things work or they will want to figureout of is this even possible. what ever goes here. still that Brand controiller support that need to deal with it.

you need to see this from steam point of view or epic games they have no right in other game client, and technicaly as games we dont care whos fault that is, Brand controiller support there is no other that can check this out or deal with it.

I just tried this, it only works when using the controller over USB, not on BT

You could join the Steam client beta (and leave Steam Input disabled). The behaviour where Steam switches the BT DualSense away from it's DirectInput compatible mode even when Steam Input was disabled has been addressed there. (I found certain configs for the Desktop Layout/Config can switch the controller's mode but I doubt its your usage)
If you wish to join, you'll find the setting for client beta participation at Steam > Settings > Interface.

BTW you don't need to restart Steam when you disable (or enable) Steam Input, and there is a Steam chord command (PS + Triangle) that'll turn off the controller.

Thank you so much, the Steam Beta worked and now I can use my controller with BT on epic games even while steam is open.
This is great, can confirm it worked for me too.

Except now, each time I boost in Rocket League it also acts as the ball cam toggle, which makes the game unplayable. You'd think I could fix that in the button assignments, but it appears the triangle button acts to "clear" any button it's assigned to.

(Venting. I just wanted to play tonight, not end up down a bunch of technical blind alleys.)
Right after I posted that: the new boost / ball cam button conflation issue went away as soon as I closed Steam, which I guess wasn't really the point of the OP.

Also confirmed: when I relaunch Steam, both buttons toggle the ball cam again. (So to clarify, boost button boosts and stupidly toggles ball cam; ball cam button just toggles ball cam. Was unable to fix via custom or default assignments in Steam.)

In my case that's fine: I would prefer to leave both Steam and Epic open, but so long as I can play RL with my Dualsense, I'm happy. I'll just leave this here in case it helps someone.

@ivocanevo

I'm not sure if you had, but there's no longer a need to switch to beta client. If you use Bluetooth, just have PlayStation Controller Support = 'Not Enabled' or 'Enabled in Games w/o Support' before you connect the controller.
Steam > Settings > Controller > PlayStation Controller Support

To avoid having to close Steam, try with the Desktop Layout disabled
- have controller connected
- Steam > Settings > Controller > Desktop Layout > Edit > Disable Steam Input

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
