Disk Write Error (Fedora 38 GNOME, Linux)
Hi All,

Looking for some help with getting steam to install games to a secondary SSD.

I just upgraded to Fedora 38 and have 2 SSDs, one for the OS and other programs and wanted to use the other for my game library. Both using Ext4 filesystem.

Whenever i try to install the games on the new SSD i am met with "Disk Write Error". I looked around online for common issues and attempted to troubleshoot myself, i have tried the below potential solutions but all have failed.

1. Check my user and group have write permissions to the disk. (checked i could create, amend and delete folders)
2. Use a chmod command to ensure my group and user have write access.
3. Using GNOME Disks application reformatted and remounted the disk. Also applied the "Take Ownership" command
4. Mounted the disk in both /Mnt (root) and my $Home directory. (Heard mounting in root can cause issues)
5. Checked partition had enough space (1tb free)

The only other suggestion i have seen online is that if the main drive is encrypted (mine is) this can cause issues but wanted to see if anyone else had any ideas before i go down this rabbit hole?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Found the cause of my issue.:steamfacepalm:

While i had give access to the contents of the drives to my user and group i had not given access to the drives themselves. This seems to have resolved this issue. Managed to install some games and transfer to my secondary drive with no issue.

For future users wrestling with this issue. If you are running GNOME, open your file systems and click "+ Other locations" on the left panel, all the drives should be present.

Right Click the relevant drive > Properties > Permissions

Make sure the both the "Owner" and "Group" have read and write permissions, the option should be "Create and delete files" from the dropdown. Then close the window. If you want to change permissions for all folders and files contained within the drive, same process as above but at the bottom of the "Set Customers Permissions" window select "Change Permissions for Enclosed Files..."
