Steamworks Common Redistributables Update/file location Bug? *Resolved*
*Update. It was a corrupted obscure file. The Content_Log.txt file pointed it out and simply deleting it fixed the issue.*

Okay, so this in interesting. I've noticed that for the last few days now, steam has been saying that there's a 0KB update for SCR, but whenever I attempt to update it, it just says there's a disk write error.

That said, all of my games are working just fine, updating and downloading as normal, etc. I've also noticed, when going to "manage files" for SCR, that it's completely empty. No folder or anything. It just takes me to a completely empty Steamworks Shared Folder.
C:\Program Files (x86)\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\Steamworks Shared
File Integrity checker says there are 0 files that failed to validate, and the path that steam is downloading things from seems to be perfectly fine after completing a 2-hour SMART check from Samsung Magician.

So I'm wondering if it's a just bug, if steamworks common redistributables is going to the wrong folder for some reason, if I'm actually missing the entirety of SCR, or why this is happening at all.

Thanks in advance!

*Update
I figured it out. I checked the log, located for me at "C:\Program Files (x86)\Games\Steam\Logs\content_log.txt". Turns out that there was a single obscure file that was corrupted and being called out in the log. By deleting that file and the two temp files by the same name, it downloaded right away.

Here is a list of all the "fixes" that didn't do anything for me.

Restarting Steam
Running as admin
Restarting PC
Changing download location
Deleting Steam Cache
Disabling firewall (since re-enabled)
Verifying file integrity
Verifying file location integrity
Moving Steam to another drive
Checking drive for errors (none found)
Deleting the temp Downloading File (keeps coming back)
Updated all computer and software drivers (no updates left)
No 0 kb files in the common folder to delete

So if anyone else has this issue, and the above "fixes" don't work, there you go. Just check the log and delete the problem file(s).*

it means that steam is trying to download a prerequisite installer but cannot write to the directory

Try running steam once as an administrator as that generally fixes permissions issues like this

Nope, That wasn't it. For the record, these are the things I had tried.

Restarting Steam
Running as admin
Restarting PC
Changing download location
Deleting Steam Cache
Disabling firewall (since re-enabled)
Verifying file integrity
Verifying file location integrity
Moving Steam to another drive
Checking drive for errors (none found)
Deleting the temp Downloading File (keeps coming back)
Updated all computer and software drivers (no updates left)
No 0 kb files in the common folder to delete

What I ended up doing was checking the content_log.txt and then deleting the file that was being called out there.
"[2023-07-06 21:47:15] Failed to write app state file "C:\Program Files (x86)\Games\Steam\steamapps\appmanifest_228980.acf" (2455 bytes)"

Apparently, once I deleted that, and the two temp files by the same name, it worked right away. So it was the case of an obscure corrupted file.

So if anyone else has this issue, and the above "fixes" don't work, there you go. Just check the log and delete the problem file(s).

Use MS own page forget steam and game devs. DL VC++ from there to all game both 32/64bit to all game,

Watchout for old games with VC++, sometimes old VC++ version nr make a double install.
and so can validate game intergrity of files. scripts runs after main game install.

gl with it.

ps.
I doubt you have MS newest file, because thats why SCR see a outdate version.
this is working on my pc atm. MS knows best, steam follow game devs and game devs do not know what MS has update it to new version.

Yeah, that definitely wasn't the case.
I have a microsoft updater that I use for checking for any microsoft software updates. Same thing for intel drivers, amd drivers, security drivers, hardware drivers, at least 2 others that are for more obscure programs. I also did a Command Box check for any outdated drivers, as well. So when I say that all my files and programs are up to date, there is a less than 1% chance that there's something I've missed.

Ultimately, there was an obscure corrupted file that I needed to delete preventing the file from downloading that wasn't being picked up by Steam's file integrity system that was preventing the update. And because Steam likes to place things in different locations than the core system, even when I've directly downloaded the items that are included in the SCR, they don't seem to get counted because of how Steam handles them.

For more info, check the update or read the message right before yours in this thread.

VC++ is not update through MS, its a thirpart app, a none gameing windows pc dont even have VC++ installed.

so im not sure what update that can do that, not even other app update them. maybe some app do this now, but it has always been game devs in the past.

and you do not get it, steam use old outdate VC++, that is already been proofed years ago.

Regardless, you're just trolling at this point so consider yourself blocked.
Besides, You're the one who suggested updating through microsoft directly in the first place, which only further serves to prove that you're a troll.
If I knew how to close this thread or mark it as resolved when the poster is the one who resolved it, I would.

Good day.

Again steam downloads required prerequisites to this directory based on what each game requires. Games might add a pre-requisite depending. Also some games are converting their 'local' prerequisites to use the central repository instead.

If steam cannot write there, its a permissions issue or your anti-virus is obliterating the download. Aka fix your permissions on the directory or find out what is preventing the writing of files to that directory

He dont seem to get steam trigger the update and somehow, he most have update something, clear DL cache will not fix what steam did see as a needed update or he had a outdate cache issue, i doubt that can happend at SCR, but now it me trolling and things he dont understand, he did something to correct it, and steam will do a trigger again if needed , clear DL is not a solution in itself, sense that is seen as part of steam system files that is require just like satoru point out.

But GL someday you will understand this steam forced SCR will run then update, thats how they do it, thats how we other learn how steam made the eror in first place and kept point at old VC++ 2017 , then is was 2019 VC++ thats was newer, and now we are in 2022, it has been a long battle in understand why so many games had VC++ issue , this seem to go away thanks to new game devs game thaat has newer VC2015-2022 file.

I'm sorry Sstoru, i doubt he understand how many years we other had to deal with steam outdate ways, and its not that logic then you dont know VC++ issue is not part of windows update.

And i dont want to waste more time on it. ( user own problem for know better then steam and game devs )

gl with it, OP

ps.
Even uninstall SCR from steam, will not work, last i tried it, and just use MS own files, steam reinstall them as now part of steam system files. ( this is my point somehow he has fixed something. )
