A fix is available in the “bleeding-edge” beta branch of Proton Experimental. Or we can use custom build of Arkanosis's Proton 8.0-2 which includes a workaround.
Discussions of these fixes are available here
https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/3189#issuecomment-1613741966
There we come to the conclusion that the fixes in Proton Experimental work, but are applicable only to those users whose GPU supports Vulkan 1.3. And those who used Proton 7.0 still can't run the game.
So that means that from now on, a GPU that supports Vulkan 1.3 is required to play AoE2:DE.
Maybe someone steps into backport the upstream Proton fix or workaround to Proton 7 (which is most likely feasible).
