Drop down menus are black after recent steam major update
Ever since the latest big update, I've had this fairly frequent issue that the drop down menus at the top are black (see image). The only way I can see to fix it is to restart steam. Has anyone else had this issue and is there a potential fix?

Same. I found two temporary workarounds but the issue always comes back. I contact steam support and they were no help none of their recommendations helped the issue.

1) If I close and reopen steam the menus return to functioning.

2) If I window Steam and move it to my second monitor all the menus work on the second monitor.

If I then move it back to my main monitor all my menus work again.

Do you find the same?

Ask steam support, you do know Monitor is been seen as a output unit, ( actual well test at factory ) and same time its GPU Driver and system that send output to it.

so if Fresh GPU driver dont work ( Nvidia has custom install, then checkbox is there with clean install option, AMD has DDU, tthen there is nothing else that look like can be other then steam it self, and why it work on 1 monitor and not other could be GPU multi screen issue, i dare you test with 1 single monitor only , and this look like the old pc issue then its was 1 pc only and 1 monitor, this is known as very old pc was build for. and only MS and GPU card support might know this. im not even sure steam know how pc was build on such. you need tech ppl from GPU card support and let them talk with MS.

gl with inform steam support, if they have not made a mistake or bug here, then only GPU support can help you.

thats okay , im use to it, user dont get it , contact GPU support and steam support.

you need to be skilled in how pc was made in the first place. that 1 monitor only.

ask yourself this how can it work on one monitor and not other, that require steam has wrote code to such and things dont work like that. Monitor can be seen as stupid as door and is as a printer you send data to it, and that why you ask support steam and GPU card support.

to sit and talk about directX and GPU related multi monitor issue here, wont help here.

Iceira, read my reply I've already contacted steam support. They were no use.

You aren't helping your replies are entirely unhelpful to the goal of figuring out when/why this happens.

Upon further testing I've been able to narrow down when this issue occurs and workaround this issue in a couple ways.

I only see this issue if both of the following are true.

1) Using Multiple monitors
2) Windows is configured in power options to turn off the display after a set time. It seems I see this issue after windows has powered off the display and I've come back to my PC and Windows has powered back on the display.

What this means is if I have a single monitor OR if I configure windows to not power off the monitors the issue doesn't happen.

Workarounds:

1) Use a single monitor

or

2) In power options disable turning off the monitor.

Start -> Control Panel -> Power Options
Change Plan Settings
Turn off the display: Never

I've also been experiencing this same issue. Dual monitors and it seems only to occur when I wake my monitor from sleep. Im surprised this scenario isn't more common but hopefully Valve fixes this in an update or something.

<< Also dual monitors, but to reproduce this problem I merely need to mouse away from a drop-down menu (so it despawns) then spawn it back, and the drop-down is solid black.

Iceira, I am facing the same issue :

in reply to what you said ,

when the client is running and no game is running, there is not a signle system level directx API call going on, so that is not a directx related issue, and no i won't be asking myself how the developer would have thought while writing the UI, that is not how sane software is shipped in the industry.

Thanks for the fix this had been bothering me for ages and also no Steam has not fixed this yet.

This thread mentions a workaround for preventing the issue from happening. A workaround for AFTER the problem has occurred is to switch to Steam BIG PICTURE mode and then back (Thru the Power menu). This forces Steam to re-initialise the interface.

I have 2 monitors. When I use the windows scaling on one of em, Steam has this behaviour on that screen. When I turn the scaling off it comes back to normal.

Thanks for this! Dragging steam from one monitor to the other has been the better "fix" for me. I don't want to disable the "turn off display" (oled monitors) so this solution works best for me now.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
