Does somebody know where in the settings to turn off the red spell checker snake lines under the words?
It is totally irritating and it looks like a spell checker

Here is a printscreen how I see my reviews:

Yup, by default the spellcheck always works in the language of your client, so writing in a different language makes it go nuts.

To disable the spellcheck:

Find

C:\Users\YOUR USERNAME\AppData\Local\Steam\htmlcache\UserPrefs.json

Open the file "UserPrefs.json" with a texteditor and

search inside the file for: "dictionaries":["de"]

change it to "dictionaries":[""]

remove the "XY" letters for your language and save the file.

(Thanks to whoever I copied this advice from years ago, when I was in the same situation)

Concrete: I should remove "de" with "eng" - is that right?

Is it also possible to COMPLETELY TURN OFF the spell checker?

That's what the instruction does: If you remove the country code, there will be no more spell checks. Did it years ago, never had a reason to regret. Give it a try. :-)

Oh thanks.

So I remove the "de" and keep it just empty (not refilling with "eng").

Is that right?

Exactly.

my userprefs.json has this:

"spellcheck":{"dictionaries":["de"],"dictionary":""}

should I still just delete the de or (since there is a second "dictionary":"") delete the whole "dictionaries":["de"], part?
Flash✪Gordon Mar 13, 2023 @ 8:16am
and notice how one is called dictionaries and the other one dictionary
Flash✪Gordon Mar 13, 2023 @ 8:17am
your example says nothing about "dictionary" only about "dictionaries"

I once begun to study informatics but then pulled the ripcord
Jerry Mar 13, 2023 @ 8:20am
This is what it looks like at mine:
"spellcheck":{"dictionaries":[],"dictionary":""
So yes, only removing the de is enough. If you feel insecure, make a copy of the old file somewhere before you apply the change.

Also I should note, that this is a local change, so if you ever get a new PC, you need to do it again.

Super Jerry!

A maybe important detail since it is a system file:

If you copy-pasted how it looks in your file (if you didn't write if from your memory) then you removed more than just the de ==> It looks like you removed the entire "de".

{"dictionaries":[], "dictionary":""}

and not: "dictionaries"[""], "dictionary":""}

maybe it doesn' matter if "dictionaries":[] or "dictionaries":[""]

I just have a bad feeling to manipulate steam system files

Might be, I just don't remember. I think, I changed that six or seven years ago and only kept the instructions in case I or someone else needs it again (and yes, the question does come up every now and then here in the forum).
Like I said, if you are worried, copy a version of the original file somewhere, so you can replace the changed one, in case something goes wrong. With a file like that, the worst you can end up with is a display error within Steam.

I would really feel better to see a actual working example.

If you have another minute of patience with me, would it be possible to go to your UserPrefs.json and make a copy-paste?

I would really appreciate it and sorry for the trouble.
