Steam install on new computer put 70 files and folders on desktop

This appears to show you how to move files, but it doesn't address how to stop a Steam installation from throwing all of that on the desktop in the first place.
Doing that is not the normal way for Steam to install, so there has to be some parameter that is causing it to throw all that on the desktop and that is probably important to know.

Also doesn't tell me what to DO with all of those files or where exactly they belong so I can safely move them.

You could start by not executing Steam.exe directly from your Desktop.

Steam.exe is not on my desktop. That was a while back. I have uninstalled Steam 3 times now. The first uninstall was done following the link above that I posted that showed what to delete in regedit. I am about to install Steam again, but I imagine it is going to install all of that stuff on the desktop again and I would rather it install everything where it is supposed to go.

Start with a clean slate.

Uninstall Steam, so that it will remove the “desktop files” - then install it properly. If it gives you an .DLL error, don’t just continue onward, stop and figure out what caused the error.

Make sure you select the drives and install directories carefully.
