This is on PayPal's end, not Valve's.

https://www.paypal.com/sm/smarthelp/article/how-do-i-unlink-paypal-from-facebook-faq3406

Seems like someone linked their account to Messenger for PayPal payments.

https://www.paypal.com/us/cshelp/article/how-do-i-update-my-facebook-messenger-notification-preference-help190

Valve even removed the highly suspicious "link your account to Facebook for an additional 50 friends slots" back in early 2020.

:qr:
Thanks. But you only linked links to "how to unlink"

I never linked my non existince FB account with paypal/steam

still: why do i have to agree to facebooks TOs to use paypal in steam?

I could use paypal now without something that woried me befor.
Someone asked last week as well. So, only you and 1 other person have asked so far.

Don't know what triggered it but I know it wasn't on Valve's end.

You could tone down the confrontational responses. The best explanation *we* have, meaning the community at large, is that it's something on Paypal's end. Why? No one has a clue. It's just something that you and one other person have made mention of so there's not a lot of context in which to provide an correct answer. The assumption is that a link was made from a Facebook account to the Paypal account.

edit: To add, after the reading the first mention of it, I made a successful purchase on Steam with my Paypal account for the first time and was not asked about Facebook at all during the process. I don't have a Facebook account either.

Same. WITHOUT the steam client.

I have never had this happen and have been using PayPal on steam for years

happened to me today as welI in the steam client. In my browser it was the normal paypal window.
Yeah what the hell is up with that, im not giving facebook permission to send me anything in their messenger, if u want me to spend money fix that crap...
Hi,

is there any news on this?

Paypal won't let me pay for Steam without accepting to transfer my data to Facebook. This is clearly in violence of european GPDR.
Why would anyone give facebook this information? Does Facebook now own Valve or Paypal?

I can confirm fred's scenario including the successful workaround.

To provide a few more details on what the issue is (I assume it to be the same as fred's, Nelly's, and awa.fiftyfour's in a different thread):
  1. Add a product to cart, proceed to payment, select My PayPal Account as payment option.
  2. Be notified that For your security, you will be required to re-authorize your purchase with PayPal.
  3. Proceed and enter your PayPal credentials.

From here on, there are two alternatives; either you're visiting the Steam store in some web browser, or you're using Steam's own client.

First off, you will be greeted differently:
Steam webpage in Chrome a écrit :
Hi, (username)!
Information from www.steampowered.com
My Steam Purchases
Steam Client a écrit :
Hi, (username)!
Information from www.steampowered.com
PayPal is on Messenger!
My Steam Purchases

Next, after your usual selection of payment options, there is another discrepancy:
Steam webpage in Chrome a écrit :
Save PayPal for payments authorized to www.steampowered.com. If your chosen payment method is unavailable, PayPal can use the other payment methods linked to your account, according to PayPal Policies. You can change your selected payment method or cancel in your account settings.

This authorization skips PayPal login when shopping in Facebook and Messenger. For security, we'll occasionally ask you to enter your username and password. You can cancel this authorization in your PayPal Account Settings.

While digging around on the web, I tried to fix the issue on PayPal first, but of course as no facebook account was linked there, no facebook account could be unlinked there.
I also reached out to PayPal support several weeks ago to ask how I can agree to the PayPal part without agreeing to the Facebook part, and got no response whatsoever as of today.

Since the issue so far appears absolutely nowhere else for me when using PayPal except for the single use case of paying with PayPal within the Steam client, maybe it is, after all, a Steam issue even if there are Steam users who are not (yet) affected by it.

Well what was the workaround?
