Error E20 and E2 Cannot login to steam
I've already submitted a support ticket for this issue but as I'm waiting for a response I'm trying to figure out what's going on.

I want to preface this by saying its not my antivirus software---literally scanned the steam app with it and it doesn't show any issues. Yesterday my antivirus flagged a game I downloaded from Steam as a virus--i uninstalled that and so far no issues. There's no viruses on my pc either, so clearly that was a separate issue.

But today, when I attempted to login, the client immediately went to "Something went wrong while while attempting to sign you in. Please try again later" with error code e20.

Tried logging in a couple more times and now I get error e2.

I reinstalled steam, I have tried changing the password on the site (browser) which came up as an error, and I've tried checking if its my antivirus (it is not).

Just a minute ago I was trying to log back in on here (the browser) and i got the same error e20 twice before it let me log in and authenticate with the code.

I see maybe a couple people on here getting similar/the same errors.

If anyone can help, please do. Thanks.

Edit: I just tried again on the client---it finally took me to the authentication code screen, put that in, but it sent me to another screen saying the same thing-now its giving me "Error Code: 20"

Somehow I got in! IDK what is going on but I just kept trying over and over and now I'm in. Didn't ask for the authentication code but I'm not complaining. What the heck even is this code?? I tried searching it and online it states that this code is most likely an issue with Steam.

Hi,

I just got this today, error code e20.

Got stuck in a infinite loop, clicking the go in offline mode didn't help.

Workaround was to scan the code thingie with my Auth app from my phone.

Scanned my PC with my Bitdefender nothing popped up so hopefully it's not malware.

I'm paranoid when it comes to these kind of things hopefully it will not happen again ? :(

Just so you know bit-defender has been caught in many connection issue, you can find many people that learn this, and i dare you test with a none bit-defender pc and its working there i bet.
this is you that proof it do, and confirm it or not, it has nothing to do with my reply you are the faulthy finder and investigater here.

And if you cant whitelist steam.exe or have not done so already then you have not paid attention sense ransomware, and i doubt any company will fix or helper with people own choise in security app, because this has been ongoing over 40 years now, its simple matter have you had to deal with this before, and it has increased over the many years with more security issue to now be a pretty common app issue.

And worst part of this other tecnicaly issue with connection look just like this.
and its here a no connection look like other issue , and fact many antivirus app has firerwall or link protections app or webprotection app as extra thirdpart app, so technical its not the AV app but the extra app that do it,. mcafee and other app like that has done this before.

And its still you that need to proof it or not, and why spare pc or friends laptop that dont have same security or make same user dont make same mistake on both with 2 diffrent app.

And safe boort mode should also helper here, afaik and other tech person most AV app and extra app startup is disable doing testing. ( if this work you just busted and proof it yourself,

And be happy you get a reply from someone that work with network and security in over 25 years, and dont give 2 cent of what they do or do not work as intended, and worst part of this we cant live without them either.

Get help from other skilled pc owner, can be best option, this is simple then you know and a hell if this is first time dealing with it.

and pay attension on forum rules , all other think its a pure connection issue, sure some might have that but then its not then such post like this might help with security issue.
Just so many get this, normaly most tech person just say contact your administartor or IT department from a company service point of view in case like this. this just dont work here, unless you have a company pc here at steam games then we are done talking, because most company pc do not have administrator rights or can change anything in the system. and who know if there is not a few steam user that fit that company pc issue here.

and this wont fit rest of the many steam user here most here own and is administrator of our pc.

and watchout for ISP now has enable ipv6 and you do not did that , even that is segmented network, and why you are in a network pocket and yet you can reach through it, even that is possible, so you see ytou need to know alot about network

and dont forget even ask own ISP , is all seem to working , because i cant get through , either i have a issue i cant solve atm , and i need to test with spare pc, and you should have done this already.so you have a idea of this outcome.

Suddenly both mobile app and steam client can't login with e20. And on pc even QR code didn't load.

Deleting that cache folder on pc worked for both O_o

After that QR code loaded and mobile app suddenly could login in. So i took picture of code and logged in on PC.

we dont belive it you are in a steam event sale with black friday atm, i suspect you are effect by own ISP into steam server, and it dont matter if this is a ISP partners partner, ask own ISP
could be a very good idea, sure test with spare pc and all other network troubleshooting guide, but fact is worst days you can have connection issue with, november 21 to 28 autumn sale.

go ahead make steam ticket and ask own ISP, most helper here might helper you, but i can also say most will not, i bet traffic will return then sale is over,

and thats why i tell you its odd it work before steam event sale , its here the double proof actual has a point, and it dont help if wife hover and hit network cable or hamster pet took a bite of cable either, point is there is always 1 person that has other own issue, but ask any helper here its every steam event sale more bad connection is seen. ( term in IT is congessted network and its only your ISP that know this, we dont.
and we see how well steam handle all doing covid19 then all was home, this is why i and other dont think its steam there is the issue anymore.


we do not work for steam, we are steam user like you, and we are not support either, and this is a user forum. and it has take years with steam event sale to learn all this.( from steam user point of view. )


ps.
and thats why it good to have 2 pc in own home, you try avoid own main pc issue

As i said to you, worst possible time you make a entry, you should have make post back then, not 1 IT technician or support will not think as i do, but its up to them if they want to help you test all possiblities. you are free to read all steam network trouble shooting guide, wont change a thing you wrote on worst day ever, same as push more ppl in a car then no room is there, and we are not lying to you not going to happend.

Do not have VPN or Wifi that extend latency ( this is fact seen from other user mention a 300milisec negociation issue back and fouth.

we have no clue why you cant connect atm, but we think steam event sale is part of the problem then many user access it.

and its here we cant help you, this is you ISP problem or steam or you in the other end.

and be happy you get this reply. instead of get angry, ( we can all igonre your netwok issue here its not a problem dont reply to any user at all, steam is not a ISP and teachnicaly cant help you at all, if this is outside steam area.

and sense November 8!!! this dont add up in this post, feel free to use a web browser so you atleast can buy games, and dl later in the client.

Test with friend laptop or other spare pc, you try to confirm its my pc and not test pc or both, same test has a try to confirm a issue.

steam server told you this just with your word statement is same ( hard word from me you connection cant be establized a line into steam server. )

I can even trough in ipv6 issue, tule is if isp has it now then you need it also.

ps.
still best advice proof this is your ISP into steam issue, ( we dont need to tell you steam firewall ports here, if worked before , and you did not change ISP or house network, even ask this is fareout,

If you have as laptop there test it at friends network, also a valid point of view.

This is why we judge roughly you have a ISP into steam issue , all what you try to avoid its my pc that has the issue.

And we still assume its your ISP or its ISP partner that has a issue, and why you cant get through them.

we are back at pipes and water explantions the lines are full and we still see it as your ISP problem to deal with it. ( any network and support know that water pipe explanations its pure education examples. )

All this is not a secret, but we tell you so you can see the ugly truth,and if im right and you dont have own pc issue, and its actual not about me being right here, its you and yours ISP that need to deal with it.

rest of the world take that HAT on thats called not my problem. proof this is your ISP and tell them you have tested this with 2 pc and spare pc work at other connection. this is what you try to explan to own ISP ( dont forget direct wallplug connection if you can. some wallplug is just a network cable direct connection to a laptop ( bypass own router even )

My girlfriend tried logging my steam account too her laptop, it did worked, but laptop doesn't work. Still won't work on my laptop to logging in. This is a rare case, dude
same issue here! deleting cache didnt work for me :-(
