is it possible to have 2 separate installs of a game on 2 different accounts?
I created an alt account on steam today because a game I like to play has private server modding capabilities, however doing this will stop you from playing the online servers so I bought a copy of the game on my alt account but the files are essentially mirrored from my main account because they're are already on my pc... is it possible to get a separate file for this game on my alt?

Install them to somewhere else. If you only have 1 drive

Install to
C:\Account1\Steam.....
And
C:\Account2\Steam.....

If you have more than 1 drive/partition install Steam and/or the library on different drives/partitions

"is it possible to have 2 separate installs of a game on 2 different accounts?"

One issue with this is that it will trigger achievements on both accounts, either all at once if you've attained them all on one account, or as you progress and play each one.

wouldn’t achievements be separate considering I bought a new copy the game on the alt? so it’s not using the license on my main?

it didn’t let me install the game, it automatically detected the file of the game on my main and is using that one. do i click ‘move install folder’ on my alt? or will that just move it for my main too?

First off, this has happened to me several times, as I often buy multiple copies of the game and it's very annoying when this happens as it makes you look like an achievement cheater.

I asked this once in the LYNE forum. It is one of the games where it happened.

The person responding said that you can lower the risk by having the save locations be different but some games will trigger anyway because apparently some of the achievement kernels are stored in the registry. I do not know if this is true but it seems plausible.

You may want to consider two separate Windows logins for each of your Steam accounts. Also separate installation paths.

That might solve your issue.

i have tried this, but I have the original copy of my game on an external hard drive so it picks it up anyway

I have an external harddrive where the game is installed on my main, when i change to the alt (on a different windows login) it still shows up along with every other game i have installed so unfortunately i'm not sure how to do this.

No it won't, Achievements are account specific. The issue would be saves as games save locally to the same location, user/documents and the other places.

So don't point the second account to the same location. Does mean having Steam and the game installed to 2 different locations, 1 per account
