Game installs/updates say "not enough space" but I definitely do have it.
I have two different drives I use for this PC. One is an SSD for games and then I have my internal SSD. I have 20Gb open on one and 15Gb on another. Sometimes when I go to install games or update them I will get an error that says "Not enough free disk space"

Currently I have a game trying to do an 84MB update on the drive with 20Gb, yet it constantly says "Not enough free disk space" and stops the update.

This will happen sometimes with installing some games too, when I definitely have enough space.

In one instance the drive with less available space was able to install a game but the other drive (with more space open) said "not enough space" so it seems kind of... unrelated to the actual available space?

Anyone with any insight?

Basics first:

- Any anti-virus running? (Windows defender’s fine though)

- Trying to install to a “Read Only” folder maybe?

- Which directory are you trying to install it to?

My AV is McAffee and I don't think that's the issue. As I just updated 2 games but the 3rd game to update (the 84MB one) gave the error. One of the two games that did update was on the same drive as the game that won't update because of not having enough space.

I'm not certain about the read only. The game is already installed onto the drive. The drive has way more than 84mb open yet Steam says it doesn't have enough space, then won't update the game. It gives the "retry this update" button. Hitting the button just gives the same error.

My directory? As in the file pathway? One is my main drive C: and the other is an external, F:

Both drives already have Steam games installed and proper pathways. It's just sometimes, randomly, a game won't update or install because it claims not to have enough space. Even though it does have enough space.

I don't know if it'd be related but for quite awhile now "allocating disk space" during installs takes forever as well. For either drive. It used to be very fast but now it only "allocates" at like 30mbs, which for a game in the high Gigs can take forever

The only thing that I can think of is that sometimes when you update a game (depending on developer I think) the update can download and reinstall the game. The drive would have not enough room for the game to think it can reinstall. As the game is 32GB but there is only 15GB free on that drive.

What I mean is, if the update makes the game reinstall (but removes the old files after) then it would not think it has enough room because the unupdated game would still be there. This game (Beam.NG Drive) seems to always "reinstall" itself after it's updated. As in, it downloads itself over again, or at least seems to.

However this doesn't explain why sometimes other games will randomly do this.

I just ran into this issue except I have about 3 TB of free space.
