Big Picture Mode broken after update
I use Big Picture Mode so that I can control Steam purely with a controller and exit one game and launch a second game with only a controller.

After the update the new Big Picture Mode had several issues and no longer could even do that today.

After exiting my first game my controller no longer even worked - I could not get it to do anything. Later I found out that I had to click with my mouse on the screen to get it to work again, like it had deselected Big Picture Mode and put it in the background or something after exiting it with my controlller.

There were no button prompts on screen like in the bottom right corner until I clicked on screen with my mouse.

The other issue was clicking Menu in the bottom left corner just made the screen go blurry but nothing showed up.

I messed around with this for a long time and ONE of the times I clicked menu the buttons did show up, but they disappeared when mousing over them.

I tried it again later and never got the buttons to show up again. My mouse cursor changed when mousing over where I saw the buttons were the one time I saw them, like they were there, but just invisible.

Please fix this, hopefully by tomorrow. Big Picture Mode worked fine until you messed it up. This isn't a "I don't like how it looks" type thing, this is a "You just broke Big Picture Mode" type thing.

Today there was an update that changed the shortcuts for New Big Picture mode to change it to Windowed.

Pressing ALT + enter now exits BPM back to normal steam, and pressing F11 now changes it to Windowed mode.

Also I found in Settings > Display, there is a setting to start BPM in Windowed mode all the time, it seems. So at least for now that is a workaround for me to have BPM not be placed in the background and be uninteractable with a controller anymore after exiting a game, by using windowed mode.

Still bugging out in the "Menu" bar in the bottom left corner, either invisible or flickering.

according to the article, "You can still use the old mode by running Steam with the '-oldbigpicture' command-line option. "

https://www.pcgamer.com/at-long-last-the-steam-deck-ui-has-replaced-steams-big-picture-mode/

That command will be removed at a later date. Be aware.

They just randomized all my custom controls into each other and some games just don't respond to any editing of the controller no matter which mode I'm in. I lost hours of work customizing my game controls. This is infuriating I hate Steam so much
Glad I am not the only one with this issue, though with a wrinkle. I use Steam Link through a Raspberry Pi to play on my TV upstairs. Last night, I could get Dorfromantik to work no problem but I could not Rocket League up or a short cut to D2 Resurrected to work. It was a mixed bag for multiple games. Several just show the steam logo with a spinning blue circle while the game is clearly running in the background since you can hear it and it makes noises while you use the controller. And if the game does work, I can't get back to the main menu or library without using a mouse.

The benefit of my set up is that I can sit on the couch and use a controller. Much like what you guys have said, after closing a game, it no longer uses the controller and I have to set the controller to mouse mode to then let me click the menu button with the right trigger. It seems to me that my setup makes Steam think I am using a Steam Deck which I am not.

Anyway, hopefully they fix it or I can get the -oldbigpicture to work on the Pi shortcut.
Sometimes i don't understand why updates have to be downgrades or why good functions are being removed! I've created multiple Playlists and used the music player in the Big Picture mode for years and suddenly these playlists which i spent hours to create and were suited to my games (for example Dark Souls 1,2,3, Elden Ring..) my whole music library index ... ALL GONE. Thats really really sad for me... it was so satisfying to reach everything with my controller. I don't want good features to be removed!! It was fine! - If you at Steam thinking, nobody used this feature, well i did and i am missing it deeply. I dont want to run another Program to hear music while playing that i cant control as easy with my GamePad.

"-oldbigpicture" should not be the solution for the future.
I would also like to add to this thread. I have an assumption that something is wrong with the drivers of the old video cards. Since the "new big picture" worked for me under Linux before, but when I started the beta on Windows, everything broke. I tried to find the official bug report form but couldn't find anything and it's still broken. Valve promised that they would remove the "old big picture" and I'm just horrified, I'm already getting ready to use the old Steam builds offline.
Made a similar thread last night but my issue is slightly different. I use Moonlight on Nvidia Shield to stream my desktop to my bedroom tv to watch youtube/Netlix/etc and have no interest in using a controller or BPM.

On my Shield, I used to be able to just open moonlight, click Steam and it'd open right to my desktop and easily able to minimize the old BPM. Now, I have to open Moonlight on my computer and then connect Moonlight to my computer to open BPM. Only then am I able to connect to my desktop via Shield. When I try connecting straight from my Shield, it connects but then the screen flashes back and kicks me back out to the Moonlight app.

Everything was working great until this update. This is a huge step backwards, despite the new BPM looking great compared to a menu window looking straight out of 1998.

As far as I know, Moonlight is my only option. The Steam Link app for Shield is absolute crap and has a ton of input lag, so I'm extremely disappointed with this terrible update.
I boot my PC directly into big picture and only have a gamepad connected. When I exit a game (Elden Ring) it does not go back to big picture mode after the update. It just gives me a black screen.
Worked fine before the update
How do I get back to make it work again?

This update sucks so bad and it worked so well before

games freeze

frame rate down to 4fps

just a horrible experience after all

fix it!!!

I pay for all these games on steam for the home console couch experience

now that it's all broken…

why isn't there more uproar about this???
Same issue here. UI is unresponsive but pressing buttons sounds like it's moving through menu options out of sight... with a big lag delay. Enough clicking sometimes gets one of the menu options to appear on the right side but then it flickers and turns off again.

Also some odd behavior that if I launch steam and have my controller on it defaults to big picture mode. That's the kind of "convenience" feature that just causes more problems than it solves.
Hello all,
incredibly slow and laggy Big PIcture using latest beta and 4k resolution, basically unusable. Perfect on steam deck instead (maybe nvidia issue?)

it's simple - the new UI is f*****g s**t in deep beta. Some people say that on amd video cards it works okay

Same issue here, wish they would just not release this until it is actually robust. Controller doesn't work after exiting game until I click the screen with the mouse then the conteoller works again.
Okay I’m having the same issue. This is really frustrating because I have a post years ago on here requesting big picture mode themes or a updated version. Got it but it’s now broken my controller only experience. Very frustrating and clicking the screen doesn’t bring it back in at times.
