Brand new Playstation 5 controller doesn't work as intended?
Hello everyone!

I've bought a brand new playstation 5 controller and I can't figure out why it's not working as intended. My goal is that it works wireless over bluetooth in Steam / games.

I am able to connect (And pair) the Ps5 controller over Bluetooth in Windows, it's being recognized as wireless controller. However, the controller itself goes into sleep mode (I assume?) and will not constantly be lit up when I expect it to. It also isn't detected by Steam in big picture mode.

I have updated the firmware of the controller and the controller functions as expected when it's wired. When it's wired it's also detected by Steam as a playstation controller being connected and it's functioning in games too.

I cannot find the right answer on Google or YouTube that resembles the same issue I have and I cannot find the solution to my problem.

Is there anyone who has encountered a similiar issue in the past and managed to resolve the issue?

Thanks in advance! :meaty:

Over Bluetooth it should be constantly lit just blue (no white player indicator lights) unless some software is changing the light bar settings.

You had the controller in pairing mode when you paired it?
If not, remove the pairing then follow this:
https://www.playstation.com/en-us/support/hardware/pair-dualsense-controller-bluetooth/#blue

If that part is fine, are you running/have installed another input mapper (e.g. DS4Windows, InputMapper)?

I had the controller in pairing mode, The light was blue but after a short while it turns (I assume) Into sleeping mode cause all lights dim. In that article you sent, which I saw before as well, It clearly states that "Windows PC devices support the controller via a wired connection." Also Windows is not listed under supported for Bluetooth, although at the same time I see many people simply use the ps5 controller in steam games without issue??

I am not using DS4Windows or any other third party app.

I believe they don't list Windows + BT because audio transmission is only supported via USB not Bluetooth. This in turn effects haptic feedback - it uses audio data.

I believe it's just this: with BT, if the lights are off the controller is off or has had its light settings changed by other software.

The other thing is when the controller is in enhanced mode, more data is transmitted over BT, the BT adapter will have to be able to handle that - but I'm not suspecting your BT device now. It won't be in enhanced mode on connection, something will have to switch it.

Has the controller been charged? (When plugged in over USB and you no longer get the orange breathing light (will have no light), then it's high/fully charged. You won't see the orange status if Steam interacts with the controller).

Test what happens with this:
- fully quit Steam (Steam can switch the controller to enhanced mode, control the lights etc)
- Run joy.cpl (press Windows key + R, type joy.cpl, choose OK)
- Connect the controller (BT) and it should show in joy.cpl.
- Select it, choose Properties and use the controller. Is the Test screen responding to input?

Is the light remaining?

If the lights go out, does the Test screen continue to respond to input, stop responding to input, or an error message about the device connection?

I've ran joy.cpl and it opened my eyes on what's going on. And it makes me even more clueless.

-Windows sees it as paired, but not connected.
-When I press the PS logo it connects for a very short amount of time. During that time of a couple of seconds the controller is fully responsive! All buttons work and it shows up in both Steam and joy.cpl.
-However I cannot get it to work for a couple of seconds in videogames. It's just steam big picture that sometimes make it pop up for a second and then it dissapears again.
-After a few seconds the controller goes back into sleeping mode and joy.cpl and everywhere else it's not detected anymore.
-Controller goes from connected through bluetooth to just paired status.

Confusing stuff..... I'm about to give up lol.

With the connection period being so short, getting a reading in games can be more tricky - there're more factors to take into account.

Perhaps its losing BT connection - when that happens they turn off.
Try pairing it to a phone, see if the connection persists or if getting same behaviour. If same behaviour then I'd think something's up with that controller.

Also don't know if you'd tried removing then re-doing the pairing but that can be a good step (you'd have to do it anyway if you do the phone test). Maybe also a system restart, then similar stuff as before: fully quit Steam, connect controller, see if it stays connected.

I'm gonna try to connect it to a phone, if it's not working I'm gonna blame the controller. Otherwise I'll probably be having to use it wired. Thanks for your time and support! :meaty:
