Shrinks all Steam Gaming Icons
Hello everyone.

I hope there is some expert out there who can help with the following problem described below.

Lately I've noticed that all my games have shrunken internal icon images:

{LINK REMOVED}

I have already googled this issue but didn't find any working solution.

It is not related to the icon dimensions as you imagined with CTRL + mouse wheel.

What I have tried:

Under regedit path Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer :

1. Added a new String named Max Cached Icons and value 8192. Result - nothing happened.
2. Changed GlobalAssocChangedCounter value from 5 to 38. Result - nothing happened.

-

3. Deleted all files named iconcache*.db in C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer + restarted the PC. Result - nothing happened.

4) Tried the custom scale to scale the screen from 100% to 150% (with signing in and out) following this instructions: {LINK REMOVED}. Result - the same issue still appears.

5) Tried to change icons manually from Steam icon path, but there are no any 256x256 size icons. Result - Idea failed.

So far I have updated everything on my PC. All updates downloading constantly. NVIDIA Experience app shows that I have the most updated video driver and card on this date. Lenovo Vantage shows that I have the most updated BIOS and network, sound, USB3 and other drivers. I have nothing to update in this moment.

I wonder what EXACTLY caused this problem and is there anybody who can help? Maybe someone can connect to my PC using Quick Assist in-built Windows app and check why it's happening.

I can't see your linked images. Are you talking about the game icons in your library?

In the steam Settings dialog (Steam menu at the top left), choose the "Library" page.
There you can choose the size of the icons.
I am talking about the icons that are on the Desktop.

Very bad that I can't post the linked pictures to show the problem as Steam has removed it.

Limited accounts can't post links to external sites.

I'm not sure i trust that file sharing site anyway. Can you use imgur.com ? We can quote it and be able to view it.

Tried to sign up in imgur. It says account sign-up is not possible in your region. Is there any alternative to share the pictures?

Windows Desktop Icon, is own resolution image or view of them. steam has nothing to do with them, seen old games do not have a icon even thats game devs or old ways before the middle view icon was added, most DL a game icon to fix such, but you make some mistake

and windows delete windows cache.db clear , then it require review on browser level or same as tell system never seen them. ( this is know as a cache data and has view them, most dont explan this, as most know this. )

and all the change you did, never did them before, besure you dont make own mistake in top of this or return them to whatever defsault was before that.

ps.

any blank icon maybe thats still invalid point to something not there, most steam user own screw up then reset steam own icon library data thats inside steam folder, reson why i use such hard words is simple to many old past guides section keep tell ppl to do it.

so then you use old post and make own clean up, thats exatly what you get, same as format c driver and then complain over system is gone or things is missing, and there is no way in heell i and other can stop old guides, steam can like lock and say old guide is harmfull, and now we are over in once worked and not best advice anymore.

there is no way in HELL , we can help user that wipe steam user data ( icon's file to install per game icon file, if user dont have back of this )
?:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steam\games

thats the problem with old clean out ways, many forget or dont know the consequence of what they are doing , even seen some game devs use steam folder as save game location.

point is you simple dont delete steam ever you make a steam.old folder and move things ot it to recover lost userdata, or reinstall all from scrates, thats is always a option, thats just dont fix save game, as you see there is no simple solutions without consequence.

assuming Blank icon desktop issue, because you moved the desktop link (url) or wiped icon's at steam folder location. ( we all did such mistake stop thing we other did not make same mistake 1 decads ago, problem is most here did not know where things was and how steam did it, and thats a diffrent matter.

so technical steam dump the old icon in that folder , steam large view icon is not even there,
is a combination in old dos ways and steam own client ways.

The problem here is the executable holds a bunch of different choices for icons sizes and formats, which sounds like a good thing, but windows usually fails to pick the right one for your current resolution/scaling/icon size.

The workaround is providing just the one matching your current setup leaving windows with no chance to mess it up.

Heres how I have fixed this:

1. Google and install “Icon Viewer” freeware app.

2. Locate the game executable .exe in your drive, navigate to file properties, now you have a new “icons” tab where you can choose and export from any embeeded icons available. You may want to select 256x256 32bit one and save .ico file to any folder of your choice.

3. Now back to your shortcut, properties, change icon, then select your ico file with no other choice but the correct size. Done!

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
