Bought Valve Index for son, want to give him Half Life: Alyx, too
I bought the Index on my account (so he can't see it before Christmas). It comes with Half Life: Alyx. I'm not going to play it. How can I give it to him? I have not installed it on my PC.

I saw the Family feature, but that seems to be only for users on the same computer. Did I miss something in that section?

If you're talking about Family share, yes you did miss something, although as per others you don't need it.

where you'll also authorize specific computers and users to share.

You need to authorize it on his PC but games can be shared across multiple PC's. However only one person can play at a time, so if you're playing a game and he wants to play a shared one he won't be able to.

You didn't. On Steam account where it made the purchase, keeps the game.

I believe the way it works is that the first account that boots with hardware receives the game. Thus as long as you don't actually connect the hardware and use your account to do the initial setup, it should go to your son.

Basically you both get copies

1) You get one because you bought the index directly from valve
2) your son will get one once he is the FIRST person to use the hardware

Hope that helps

Anyway hope you have a great christmas. Your son is definitely gonna be rockin

Hope you're right, Satoru! Thanks for the suggestion. I'll make sure I don't do anything with it until he does.
