Buy the background from market, wait 7 days then trade the background via a Steam Trade.

Yes, you can. Make a trade offer, select the background, and select "ready to trade" (or something of the likes), then confirm the trade. That allows you to make a one-way trade.

Doesn't look like you own any tradeable backgrounds

If it isn't in the trade window, then it isn't tradeable. Check the tags for the item on your inventory. Heads up: You can't trade items bought from the point store.

Attack your son's profile with awards for the sum of 9k points and after 14 days he'll get 3k points and buy that profile pic
