Games Launch to Black Screen with Background Sound
Hi,

I'm having some really annoying issues with most of my Steam games that used to work correctly on my laptop. They recently started to launch into a black screen (both on fullscreen and windowed) with the background sound still playing.

Don't have a clue about what could be causing this as all battle-net games run fine, but some Steam games aren't (Witcher 3, watch_dogs and Darkest Dungeon mainly are black screening, while others are working just fine like Stanley Parable and Orcs Must die).

I've tried the alt+enter thing, updated all my drivers, re-installed directX, no Adobe CC on tray, launch as windowed and fullscreen, launching on directX 9 & 11, safe mode, unchecked fast startup, trying the games on laptop and external drive, turned off Nvidia GeForce Experience and whatnot. None of the fixes I've seen online seem to work for me. Any idea what could be causing this? :steamsad:

Laptop specs:
Nvidia 860m

To be clear, when you try to launch as windowed does it succeed, and is the screen still black?

It launches successfully but the screen is all black. Can hear the game sounds in the background and the menu buttons as I move the mouse around tho.
If you experience a black screen even in windowed mode, then it's likely a driver/GPU issue. If you only experience the issue running fullscreen, then it's likely a resolution/refresh rate issue.

Then it's a drivee/GPU issue. What do you suggest? Maybe a rollback to an older version?
Assuming you have the most recent version, yes. If you are already running an older version, I would first try updating to the latest and seeing if that resolves the issue.

Still not working even with roll-backed drivers.
Did the games formerly work, or have you always experienced this problem running them?

They formerly worked right after downloading them and hitting play. Only played a bit on different occations but they were working fine from launch to exiting the game. Now that I wanted to play again it starts up with the black screen.
Okay. Try looking over the list of programs which may interfere with Steam,

None of those is on. BUT I finally got it to work.

Solution was (in addition to the driver rollback) was installing Nvidia Notebook Driver GeForce Windows 10 Driver BETA and rebooting the computer.

GOD IM SO HAPPY. After 2 weeks of trying everything it finally worked >_<

Thanks habitualaction for the help :D

I'm glad you were able to get it working, and thank you for sharing the solution.
