Steam key entered twice? HELP

Recently I tried to add the steam key for Terraria from my cd-rom case. Me already having Terraria installed on steam it came up with a message something like 'This games is already installed on your computer'. I thought fair enough so I decided to give the steam key to a friend. He then told me that it had already been redeemed.

Was that my fault for trying to enter it earlier? If so, are there any suggestions as what to do about this problem?

if you tried the key in your acc and it said you already own this game means its not used it can be something else maybe ur key already used somewhere else. for being sure go here https://store.steampowered.com/account/licenses/ and check if there is activation of terraria

Thats right but I have never used this code and I bought the game brand new.

Ok I checked that link out and it mentions nothing of Terraria

then u didnt used the key its already used before or ur friend doing something wrong.no other way then asking where you bought from.

I entered the code into my PC again and it asks if I want to install Terraria again?

you cant check the key in your acc if you already own the game it will only say you own the game and process to installation.there is no way to check the key until u use a diff acc but it will be activated if its not already used and u cant use it again.
