Extremely loud eardestroying static noise caused by opening Steam
So last couple of weeks whenever I switch to Steam from another program via alt-tab or otherwise or when I open up the in-game overlay, there's a small chance the audio will become extremely distorted into very, VERY, loud static noise.
The static noise continues until the source of the audio is stopped, be it my web browser or the game I'm playing, then everything is back to normal.

I have narrowed it down to it happening because of Steam, as it always happens the exact moment Steam gets opened.

Aside from giving me a small heart attack each time, I'm pretty sure this is slowly damaging my hearing.
Nothing from any search engine has helped me reach the cause, I've updated all possible drivers and reinstalled any audio-related programs.

My headphones are Logitech's G633, but it may not be related since this never happened on my old machine with these headphones nor did it happen for several months on my current machine.
I also use Logitech Gaming Software, and I connect the headphones via USB and not the 3.5mm jack.

I'd rather ask the community because my experience with customer support with huge companies is just cookiecutter responses and zero interest.
Anyone else have any experience with this? Any ideas what I can do?

You might simply try disabling any " enhancements " enabled in your system Sound settings. Sometimes they conflict with other programs.

I would try that but the Enhancements tab gets replaced by "Logitech Gaming" if you use their software, I don't see any equivalent of sound enhancements in the logitech gaming software options either.

Likely a driver issue I would think. Have you tried updating ?

1. Uninstall the gaming software.

2. Open search box(windows+R) and type %Appdata%.

3. Delete the Logitech folder in AppData.

4. Open Device Manager, go to "Sound, Video and game controller" and uninstall all Logitech devices you see there(right click, uninstall).

5. Download latest (https://support.logitech.com/en_us/software/lgs) from the web.

6. Disconnect the headset from PC and keep it disconnected.

7. Restart PC.

8. Install latest LGS.

9. Restart PC.

10. Plug the headset into a different USB port.

Alright I followed your steps, the static noise thing only happens once every few weeks generally so I might not be able to report back if it works or not for a while.

Thanks a lot for your detailed suggestion, I really appreciate it :)

I tried these steps and still, every few weeks get this ear-destroying static. Sucks.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
