Steam icons fix
I have tried various tricks, but none are easily working. First I rebuilt my thumbnail/icon cache on win 10. If I change icon for a broken icon to the ones located in steam/steam/games it will remain a globe. If I try to go to local files and verify to re-download the icon files, still will not update like it should. If I try to create a new shortcut it will start broken. Advise short of trying to re-install my 700+ games?

You are using the wrong game launcher. Sometimes games have different launcher types in their folder ensure you are creating a shortcut from the right launcher.

The shortcuts work, just the icons are not properly showing.
Here is a screenshot of what I mean: https://imagebin.ca/v/4XHkDE8igaLx
As you can see I have the icon in steam - steam- games. The properties is is set for for the url shortcut shows the correct image, but will not render in explorer. I have used change icon to point to the correct icon in games, but it will not show. @Jaunitta The shortcuts were created by steam and were not altered. Even if I ask steam after verifying the local files to make a new shortcut, the will either be blank or the globe icon. Also I know my screenshot shows only two icons, I just recently cleared and was re-downloading them by re-verifying the local files thinking that they could have been corrupted somehow. On a side note, in case someone asks, yes, the .url files are set for internet browser. Also yes I did restart the pc after clearing the icon cache and giving a good day to allow for those files to get re-updated with no luck. The icons that do show are ones I have experimented with as a workaround, but would like to not have to do it 700+ times.

Any ideas?

Well idk. All mine work in Steam but I know how you feel I have alot of Favorites in chrome and that stupid thing can't remember an icon for a day I hate it so bad.

I'd check Windows folder options and see if you have some option checked or unchecked for icons/thumbnails maybe try different views, but if it's working for everything but Steam then something else must be wrong.

What I would try if you have to have shortcuts like that is MOVE all your steam games out of the steamapps folders then Uninstall completely. Your games will stay if not in the Steam folder. Then restart, then reinstall a fresh download of steam and close it. Move the games back into steam folder then relaunch. It should re-validate all your games at that point. Might take a while. Might be worth it.

Not sure what else you could try but it should work. I just created a shortcut with one of your games that doesn't have an icon and it worked fine.

I can feel your pain.

I think I know where you are going with this. I have tried changing the view types with no luck.

That is an idea, would save a bit for re-downloading the games. Also the shortcuts work, just no proper icon. I will try this a little bit later after anyone else has other good ideas. It is a shame Steam doesn't have a more unique shortcut then url files.

I had this problem for a few years, and finally figured out how to fix it. First right click on the file, and then select open with. After that it will give you a list of options. What you want to use is internet shortcut. Don't select a browser as it will use that browsers icon instead. This should fix the problem for you.

First off I don't have open with for .url files. Second, in default programs url files are set to internet browser. Third, my option to change that is internet browser or search windows store and wouldn't let me choose anything else. Fourth, thank you for trying to help.

I know this is more than a year old but it might help people who google for it

the issue is that the .ico file is missing, open the url file in a text editor and you will see something similar to this:

this is for Wuppo:

[{000214A0-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}]
Prop3=19,0
[InternetShortcut]
IDList=
IconIndex=0
URL=steam://rungameid/400630
IconFile=C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steam\games\5861e02cb40ad091766c2449f8a1cc82ed65e2e6.ico

so, the .ico file here is missing from C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steam\games

I am using the Everything app to search for 5861e02cb40ad091766c2449f8a1cc82ed65e2e6.ico and it's not there.

a relatively easy fix for it is, verify game integrity from right clicking the game, properties, local files tab, verify integrity of game files..

you can cancel it usually literally 5 seconds later and the icon file appears in the folder, refreshing shows the icon.

That would / should work. However in my first post this did not work for me. Luckily with a windows update seemed to fix the issue. Also I did have the files locally there and they were just fine. However I find this information helpful. If my issue resurfaces again I will be checking that url data for icon file and see if that could be incorrect in my files.
Thanks
