Windows 2000 client
I am one of the few out there that still uses windows 2000. Although it may be old, I should still be able to use it. Is it too much to ask for? I would like to at least use an offline verson of steam so that I can play my games on windows 2000 but no, I can't. same goes for windows 98 as well. Anyways if anyone knows of some old client I could download let me know or put your reply on what you think.

Many apps no longer support WinXP or previous OS. Many have also stopped supporting Vista.

If you want to continue to use Internet Apps and keep them updated, etc. Then you need to be using a newer OS.

Even in WinXP for example, you can install Google Chrome, but it is an older (now legacy) version and until install / update it warns you that no further updates will be allowed, due to no longer supporting WinXP OS.

You can't download an old Steam Client; as only the very latest version is ever available at any given time.

Why would u possibly stay on those old OS? That must mean your machines are also just as old; as Hardware makers stopped supporting those MANY years ago (over a decade ago) You shouldn't be on the internet with those older OS' and if you do, well then expect newer apps to simply not support them, or work to their full ability.

I think at this point in time you should probably assume your computer is part of a botnet if you're still running 98 or 2000. Nearly 6 years of no security updates for 2k, and nearly 10 for 98.

Yes if you can't go buy (or unwilling) Win7 or later; then just go download a Linux build distro and use that. At least it will be up to date. Just know that many newer games require a 64bit CPU & OS.

And if using any Single Core CPUs (even an old Athlon64 one) it is time to get a newer machine.

Yes it does; cause it has to go Online to Update.

There is no ways around that; it's part of the DRM.

You can start it in Offline Mode; but still you need the latest Steam. There is no ways to go grab an old one. Not from any source I would suggest or trust for that matter.

I understand where you guys are coming from, but that is not why I want steam on an ancient OS. Sure I could upgrade to a new OS but I want to relive a time in my life that was stress free and I didn't have to worry about all the things I do now. I simply want to boot up my Petnium 4 gateway, put on some smash mouth and play half life.

Look ig u gonna use Steam.or digital games. You have to have a newer OS and be Online. Thats just the way is.

If the games are old. As in from circa 1998-2006 you should be able to run them straight from the directory. In which case simply move the game folder outside of steam and create a shortcut to the executable to the desktop. Example, Unreal gold, Thief gold, Starwars Jedi Knight, Quake, and Quake II do not need steam to run. Once games are downloaded and installed move the game directory elswhere, or just launch the games from the exec. Move the PC to another desk and get a more up to date one for interfacing with the web. I have an old Windows 98 with a pentium Slot 1 450Mhz with a Voodoo 3 card that I use for my realy old and nostalgic games. And a somewhat more recent P4 2.4 GHz single core with GT6800 for the in between stuff like the Mechwarrior series, and Apache Havoc flight sim. And my net facing PC, a I7 2600k with R9 380 nitro for the new stuff.

Find an old Half-Life disk. Doesn't require Steam at all. Actually that would be true of almost all games from that era, as HL2 was the real catalyst for requiring Steam.

yea HL1 doesn't require Steam if u have it on disc. Steam was not even out yet (not til around HL2 came out)
