Can I pause a download, turn off the computer without losing the download progress?
Hello. I want to purchase, download and install Shogun 2 Fall of the Samurai but I don´t have enough time right now because the download is too big, my internet connection downloads at a maximum of 600 kb/s and I would like to continue with the download the following week so I will need to turn off the computer at least twice. Will I lose the download progress and start again?

Thanks

Works fine, even without necroing a thread from 2016.
2021, still working
Same, I was downloading csgo and woke up this mornind and saw it at 0%, I'm really pissed too.
I challenge all those who say it works 100% of the time to try it on Rainbow Six Siege.
Now having the same problem with Doom Eternal.
I challenge those people to try that as well.
Prove me wrong - please.
It works, but if an update is released before the download is finished, the update is reset to download the latest files.
it worked, i started downloading ark late got it to 200gb/305gb before going to sleep, i paused the download waited a lil then closed steam and turned off pc, now its downloading again.
At which point did it resume downloading? 200GB or from the beginning? That was my question.

100% does not work. I downloaded a 50 GB game, I had to go so I paused the download and pressed the steam close button. Turned PC on in morning and had to install it all over again... really pissed.

No it does work, what most likely happend is that the game had an update/patch in the time you had the download paused. If that happens and the download starts again Steam checks the download files version and if it finds newer files ( because of the patch) he will delete the old ones and start from the beginning.
Can be quite annoying.

Does not work. Was downloading forza 5, 100+gb, had to stop after 5 hours and leave the house when I had 11 minutes left, so I paused then shut off my pc. Came back the next day and I can't download the game because it i don't have 100gb left on my drive after it took nearly everything. It won't recognize that there was a download that occured.
dont pause downloads, i left my pc on all night installing mw2 to see it was at 50% me getting happy thinking i was gonna be able to play the game paused the download and went to play with a friend who wasnt online. So when i went back to resume the download all the progress had deleted and i had to restart FOR THE 4th time. i dont know why steam has such a bad download system but at 1mb/s download speed maybe even less, it can take me days to download things and for the progess to just disappear pisses me off soooo much. Yeah so dont pause downloads
Sounds more like a you problem then a Steam problem.
Steam can easily saturate Gigabit connections to a point where the IO of a system can be a bigger bottleneck then the connection itself.

I only have a 100 Megabit connection, but i can reliably download games, no matter the size, including 100GB+ titles at 12.5 Megabytes per second.

Downloads aren't cleared without reason either. Either the data was corrupted, or was outdated due to a patch being released.

I pause, shut down my PC, turn it on and resume my downloads a hundred times. Never lose any progress
I just DL'd ESO, had an hour left of about 6H of DL, paused, shut down PC, turned on next day.
0% DL'd.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
