Gifting items that weren't bought as gifts
Hi.

I have a pack of three games in one key, and I want to gift one of those games to a friend. However - they have two of the games already, so I can't just give them the key, because those games will disappear.

Can I put those games into my inventory by activating the key (meaning I can still keep the two games they already have) and still gift them the game they want? I've seen the instructions to do this, but when I click on a game I own (but haven't yet downloaded) it doesn't show the send gift options.

Can you only do this with games bought as gifts?

Thanks.

No, CD-keys won't turn into Steam Gifts*.

* = except keys which provide a x-pack, like 2-pack, where the former is registered to your account and the latter is granted to your inventory.

If you want to give your friend the CD-key, just do it over the PM.

You cannot gift games in your library. If you want to gift games, buy them as gifts from the Steam store.

The game wasn't bought - I got it from Tremor. Basically I'd have to trade it with them then?

a cd-key is all or nothing, there's no way to split it like you're asking.

I wouldn't exactly call anything involving a CD-key a "trade", since it can't be inserted into the trading window and is thus more a 'giveaway for a giveaway with risks involved'.

When redeeming the CD-key, it's all or nothing. There's no excluding those licenses you don't want to add to your library.

Teutep - Sorry, that's what I meant. Put the key into my library and then trade with my friend the game they want. Is that what I'd have to do?

No, that's not possible.

Teutep - Okay. So: all I can do is give them the key?

That's the only way, but they won't get extra copies on those games they already have. Sorry.

Meaning only 1 out of the 3 games will be of use.

If they are real life friends of yours (and you trust them), what I'd do is, activate the key yourself and use Steam Family Sharing. That way, should the game be sharable, they should be able to play it from your library.

Teutep -Thanks for the help. I guess I'll just lose the games by giving them the key.

Luckily our definitions aren't ruined by you not knowing us.
