Is there a way to deactivate or bypass Steam's mobile authenticator?
It's a burden and completely useless to me and simply impedes my ability to sell items on the community market and trade for items in TF2. Why don't I use a smartphone? Because I have this thing called a C-O-M-P-U-T-E-R. I'm not going to buy something that probably costs 200 euros for the sole purpose of selling something that might cost eight cents on the community market.

I already have the phone number authentification on my cell phone, and other more obvious security stuff in place. Let me trade! And yes. I already talked to the staff. They were no help. At least they answer fast. Will help if I have non-trade related issues certainly.

No, you can't bypass it without the mobile authenticator

Welp, seems like Valve ♥♥♥♥♥♥ me over. All this metal and no way to use it.

Unless...you think it works on large touchpads? My mother has one so I might be able to use it temporarily.

It doesn't have to be on a cell phone. It has to be on an andriod/ios device. Doesn't even need to be on the device you get SMS from.

Just make sure it has the correct time. No 5-minutes-ahead-so-i'm-not-late crap.

It CAN'T be a cellphone. Those are made to serve the purpose of being a phone.

And by iOS...uhhh...you think an Archos tablet would work?

Does the tablet have Android 2.2 or higher, or iOS 6.1 or later?

Why don't you try to get the app and see if it runs...

A smart phone is still a cell phone, with additional functionality.

How am I supposed to download the app on a cellphone from 2005? You know, the flip cell phones? THat's why I said cell phone and not smart phone.

I checked the box that it came with and it used 4.4 android 'kit kat (bar)' before it was used.

4.4 more than meets the requirements for the mobile app, you can download the mobile auth on that and use your cellphone to receive the SMS.

Ooo. This is great initial information. Thanks. Can I deactivate the mobile auth afterwards with that?

With your phone? Sure, but you'll be right back to trade/market holds if you disable it.

N-no. The mobile app thing. On the giant touchpad. And why are you still talking about my phone? Do you not know the difference between a cell phone and a smart phone?! THIS IS MY PHONE:

But without the front screen. Or the camera.

No one cares about your phone.

The suggestion was to download the app on the tablet that you mentioned.

I said that the app doesn't HAVE to be on the phone that receives the SMS.

Yes, I do know the difference between a cell phone and a smart phone. I also know that removing the authenticator if your tablet breaks or you otherwise find yourself unable to log in to the app requires an SMS message, just like activating it does.

If you still have access to the app:

You can remove two factor authentication from your account by opening the Steam Mobile App, navigating to the Steam Guard menu item, and choosing a different method of Steam Guard protection, such as "Get Steam Guard codes by email".

It's not my tablet. It's my mother's, so I'll use it tomorrow to remove this cumbersome thing.

Do note that the cumbersome thing has to be enabled for 7 days for it to affect your holds.

And everytime items leave your inventory, you have to do the confirmation on the said device.
