Use Controller + keyboard at same time?
Is it possible to have inputs from both your controller and your keyboard register into a game you're playing at the same time, as if they were two parts of the same controller setup?

The reason why I ask is this: I would very much like to get into Skyrim modding (and purchase the game even though I already own it for PS3), and many mods use hotkeys to add new functions to the game (such as wearable lanterns or dodging/sidestepping). I'd still very much like to use my controller for the game itself, but it would be nice if I could set up keys on my keyboard to do certain things adn the buttons on my controller to do others.

For example (I'm using PS3-controller terms to help keep the names of buttons and keyboard keys as different as possible), I could have L-ALT be Wait, which would free up Select on the PS3 controller. I then make Select activate the Character Menu (which then frees up the Circle button). Then I use the now-free Circle button as the key for dodging (which TK dodge configures to L-ALT by default).

I've done some searching around and it seems like nobody else has asked this question before. I do not know if this is because someone has and I couldn't find it, because the answer is very obvious, or because most people think that would be too complicated to set up/remember anyway.

There might be a way via editing ini files, but I'm not sure. From my own experience, whenever I have my controller plugged in, I'm not able to use my keyboard/mouse until I unplug my controller.

Thank you, this answers my question.

I'm going to get to work on figuring out how to do such a thing, but if anyone has already figured it out before me, I'd greatly appreciate it if the method(s) of doing so were posted in these here comments.

I have a wired Xbox 360 controller that I use for gaming and I am always able to use both the controller and KB&M.

This is how my experience is as well.

Never really had issues using both during the same session.

I can imagine it's clunkier in some games (i.e. Resident Evil 5 where it takes a short while to change the input) than in other games where the transition is much quicker.

It's game specific. It's possible for developers to leave both enabled (and in some games they do) but they usually disable one input method when you enable another. You only have to consider Big Picture Mode to realise that they can indeed be used at the same time - if - the developer programmed their interface that way.

Well I have yet to come across a game that doesn't allow you to use both at the same time.

OP is specifically talking about Skyrim, and controller plugged in equals no use of keyboard/mouse unless something has recently changed.

I don't have skyrim on pc so I can't speak for that game specifically, but in my experience the vast majority allow both at the same time.

I do have Skyrim and that's the result.
Thanks to everyone for your help; you have informed me that the answer is Yes for some games and No for others.

When it comes to Skyrim, the answer is No, unless if you edit the controlmap.txt file. Someone has made a mod for it on Nexus. Currently looking to see if it's also on Steam workshop.

Interesting, are you just using a standard wired 360 controller?

Just tried my Thrustmaster GPX Lightback (Wired, X360) and I couldn't control KB/M while having the controller plugged in in Skyrim.

Seems Skyrim doesn't like both at the same time then. Kinda weird.
I could not find a mod for it on the workshop, but I did find a mod that allowed you to make certain controls act as hotkeys while holding down Left Bumper:
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=19981&searchtext=control+keyboard

Here's the mod for using both the keyboard and the controller simultaneously from Nexus:
http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/30913/?tab=2&navtag=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nexusmods.com%2Fskyrim%2Fajax%2Fmodfiles%2F%3Fid%3D30913&pUp=1

The txt file provided in the Nexus mod is rather unorganized with its use of whitespace, and many people are reporting issues with the mouse not working with the mod active (but some users get it to work through some edits to the txt file in the download).

While I would have absolutly no need to use both at the same time, I'm glad you were able to find a workaround mod for yourself.
