You should uninstall them first, yes. I don't know if you absolutely have to.

whe upgrading from amd/ati -> amd or nvidia -> nvidia you dont need to uninstall old drivers unless you have issues

amd/ati -> nvidia or nvidia -> amd, its best to uninstall the old driver before swapping gpus
I upgraded from 9600 GT to HD6950 without removing the Nvidia drivers before.

I've also reinstalled the Nvidia drivers with Geforce Experience using both cards connected..

Haven't messed up anything for me (my Nvidia Shield controller worked with AMD card but still having the Nvidia drivers before but doesn't work now for whatever reason. I guess there's some slight chance they worked better when the Nvidia card was the only card installed and the one used when I installed them the first time or whatever. But the drivers install regardless and it's hard to see how the actual graphics card would work with the drivers that way but not the f* controller which really shouldn't depend on the graphics card at all.)

Maybe you risk less trouble if you remove them but I assume you're just fine just putting the new graphics card in too.

Previously yes, now i guess its ok to just upgrade.
Allways do a clean deinstall of your graphic driver before changing your graphiccard
