could I use the steam authenticator on my ubuntu laptop
Hi all, I've been looking for a way to use the steam authenticator app. safely but without having to buy a new phone (I have a windows phone which I love and just can't afford to buy another phone just for this as I'm retired and on a pension) Anyhoo, I've seen all of the workarounds and was considering the Bluestacks android emu. method when a thought ocurred to me. I have an old laptop with ubuntu installed. It's only 3 GB ram but it's a good laptop about 7 years old. Would it be possible to use this laptop to run the app. and how. Thanks for any advice.

Theres always the unofficial Steam authenticator in the Windows phone store. Its unofficial, but it seems to do its job just fine.
The Steam desktop authenticator is unofficial too, just so you know so it has the same risk.
You can run it on Ubuntu, I think its a .NET app and as such, it should run under Mono.

Oh I must have misunderstood the purpose of bluestacks etc. I thought they emulate android so if I used ubuntu as it's an android os I wouldn't then need an android emulator because I am already using an android operating system. I feel pretty stupid right now. So, what does bluestacks etc. do then.

Ubuntu is not Android, its Linux. Linux can't run Android apps except with an Android emulator.

Oh I get it, so is there an android os I could put on my laptop and if so would I then be able to run the authenticator without having to use bluestacks etc.

Edit - yeah I know, I put linux when I meant android, I've changed it

There are Android distributions for the desktop (or laptops) but you obviously can't rum Steam games in them.

No I don't want to run games, just the authenticator but think it would be a lot of hassle.

Well, then install a PC android. Theres ConsoleOS and the cool kid on the block is Remix OS.

The whole point was to avoid doing that I tried blue stacks and got a bucket of crap I didn't want and also you have to agree to three apps a day or pay a monthly sub. Also looked at a few other aternatives all had really bad reviews about nasty stuff happening to the pc , unable to uninstall that sort of thing so I was looking for a way to avoid all that if pos. It's only so I don't need to wait 15 days to sell my cards so it's not that imp[ortant really but thanks for the help.

Are you running the authenticator on droid4x or do you know if it's pos.

@ ReBoot - I thought about the unofficial app. and have been trying to find out up to date info about if anyone has had any problems and if anyone has used it for long anough to say it's reasonably safe or if it goes wrong what happens to your account. I downloaded it but the links to the guy who made it and all reviews are dead

The reviews are in the app store, not behind links.
i didnt try steam app in that but i am using for all other stuff for apps games or chat apps etc. its totally free not like blue stacks which ask u to install apps daily. but ur best try is to use desktop authenticator its unofficial but still maybe help u. but idk again if droid4x and that dekstop authenticator is for ubuntu or linux so if not better install windows in your laptop. your easy chances are to try https://github.com/Jessecar96/SteamDesktopAuthenticator on your own risk
honestly i dont need even a single protection from steam these mobile and sht. ._. there should be option for those need and those don't.

In the app store itself there is the worda 15 ratings highlighted in white just below the 3.5 stars it has been given. Normally if you click either of these you get taken to the reviews. Neither of them are working on my phone.
