Steam overlay doesn't work with Gamepad
I just bought a Logitech F310, it works well with Steam Big Picture mode and my non-steam games, but when I try to access the Steam overlay from a game, nothing happens. Maybe it's a defect with the controller?

EDIT: I'm using Windows 10 Pro with the anniversary update installed, the controller I'm using is set to XInput

If you have Win10, exit Steam and press Winkey+G and turn off XboxOne related overlays. As that kills the ability for Steam Overlay to function properly when enabled.

Bump because this issue still isn't solved

Anniversary Update then most OS settings are now all defaults once again.
You need to change that, such as Disable Xbox and the Winkey+G Overlay.

You may even need to reinstall some software and/or drivers as a result of this update.
Which is essentially a whole new OS.

Which drivers would I need to install?

Bump...

Because it's 2019 and I'm facing this same issue even after trying the things suggested above in this post.

Bump, because it's July 2020 and I still can't open the overlay with a gamepad (I have to use shift-tab), and I've done all the suggested fixes.

This really seems like a long-standing Steam glitch. Maybe they could, you know, fix it? Heh.

Controllers don't have enough buttons for that.
megalomanium Jul 6, 2020 @ 6:33pm
Yes. They do. Steam overlay literally used to open with the center-button press. That's why it conflicted with the Xbox Game Bar (and part of why you had to turn it off). Now it doesn't work. Steam Controllers even still support chording shortcuts (ie. center-button + Y turns it off), they just don't support opening the overlay anymore with a single press of the center button for... reasons?

Well it sure isn't to sell Steam Controllers. That's a dead project atm and they aren't sold anymore.

Have people tried an XBO or PS4 controller and see of works, when wired. An tried it via the official PS4, Xbox, Generic option in BPM in Steam? As none of the controllers really work 100% properly when connected via a BT adapter

I've had 100% functionality over bluetooth for years and never had a problem with anything until this issue started just a few days ago. If I find what it is I'll post back here.

A Win10 update from March 9th caused tons of issues.
They have since released a hotfix update that addresses the problems caused by that update; do a manual Check for Updates in your Win10 via Settings > Updates & Security > Windows Updates > Check for Updates.
