What does flushing steam do?
I was told that the best way to get a game that refuses to update for me to work again is to flush my steam account. Before I do that though I was hoping someone could elaborate on the full effects of flushing my account, so I don't get rid of something I don't want to.

It is essentially resetting Steam to it's default state.

Think of it as reinstalling, without having the problem of uninstalling all your games.

So it deletes everything on my account that wasn't there when I got there? Or does it only get rid of corrupt files?

It doesn't delete anything it just resets Steam in case something was changed improperly or corrupted. You'll still have pretty much every single file that you had before.

It's a last resort tool without reinstalling Steam itself. Should verify the Steam client core files and repair corrupted ones. Your personal settings remain untouched though.

Did you find a way to update/download games. I'm also having troubles with this

This isn't the best way, at least not in all cases. If a game doesn't work for different reasons, then flushing Steam won't fix anything.

Then what would you suggest? Another thing that doesn't seem t be working is the "veryify content" option, which would tell me if any file is corrupt. That is one of the things that makes me think it might be a steam issue, not a game issue.
