24-bit / 44 or 48 khz is just fine.
Whatever the default is (which is usually 24bit/48khz) would be just fine.
Now some older games have issues using that (such as Call of Juarez games) and sometimes require you change this in your OS to 16bit/44khz
Going above 24bit @ 48 doesn't really help on Analog; that is where Digital Audio comes in; like when using Optical Toslink, which has a range as well, but is best suited for 24-bit/192khz
Remember though, Gaming vs Pro-Recording is a bit different.
Some games with in-game voice might not sound right (like your voice to other people in-game) if your Playback and Recording differ within the OS for the bitrates.
Maybe that's a wrong analogue, but if you resize a 441-pixel-wide image to 480 pixels, it too loses some quality and sharpness.
44.1k samples/sec allows for a max 22.05khz
above that is ok, but you wont hear a difference
similar with 16bit (256bit+/-) vs 24{4096+/-)/48(16.7k+/-)bit steps between low and high on waveform
speakers do not have that kind of accuracy
any modern sound card can deal with 44.1 and 48khz input and decode it properly
