Do some games still use .gcf and .ncf files?

I have been moving my Steam directory every time I've built a new system since Steam launched. A while back they converted games to a new format that didn't use .gcf and .ncf files.

I have yet again built a new PC. I now have a 500GB SSD as well as a 2TB HDD. I did a clean install of Steam to the SSD, and created a Steam library on D: which is the HDD. I moved my old steamapps to the Library on D: for now, but I'm going to move some games to the steamapps library on the SSD.

I noticed that there are still a few .gcf and .ncf files still in the steamapps directory. Are these files still used by their games or are they leftovers that didn't get deleted after the conversion?

I thought about deleting them and verifying each game's cache, but if they are needed, the .gcf files are quite large and I'd rather not have to download them.
