vpn and steam
I've noticed that I can't really get any speed while connected to a virtual private network. Turn it off and boom speed returned. Is this something steam does on pourpos or is it the vpn? Or just some kinda setting I'm missing

A VPN by its very nature would impact speeds.

Keep in mind, while not against the rules to use a VPN, if you are using it to bypass region restrictions it becomes a violation of the SSA.

Not doing that for just security and ananimity but I'm talking about 54kbps with it on vs 9megs with it off.

Obviously I turn it off now but was just wondering if its supposed to do that for some reason

Using VPN servers will always have an effect on internet traffic speeds.

There are a few reasons for this.

1. Distant server: This is the first and most obvious one. You're not connecting through the server closest to your actual location, but you're connecting through a distant server which will impact speeds since there's a longer route to connect to the distant server.
2. Geographic location - The physical distance between your current location, our servers that are spread out in different locations around the world, and the location you are getting content from (the website's server your connecting to) can also impact the speeds you're receiving.
3. Your ISP - Some ISPs throttle (slow) encrypted communications. This is unfortunately becoming more common now-a-days.
4. WiFi connectivity - VPN is somewhat more susceptible to poor WiFi connections.

shiel also missed the fact that additionally the VPN itself might have an entirely different (and potentially much slower) connection to the internet, and even if not can be shared with other people which can throttle the traffic as well.

Thanks :) I missed that one.

Ok thanks guys. But my speeds while using it on everything else are darn close to my actual speed just only seems to happen with the steam app. Like today there was a small update for a game and and when it started downloading it tanked the whole connection to everything. So I closed the steam app and everything else started up again. So I finished what I was doing and turned off the vpn and started steam back up and the gig update was done in 30 seconds. Also it's happened quite alot lately but even if I'm not doing anything steam won't download faster then like 56k while that vpn is on.

I know this is an ancient thread but I'm experiencing the same today: My ISP speed is 100/100 mbps. My VPN is connected to a server in my country for maximum speed. ookla shows 100/100 BUT Steam is <1mbps and that SUX, STEAM !!! DO something about that! It's almost 2020 and you still seem to use pre-historic download protocols ?? dafog ?? :D

VPN aside...

Try all download servers until you find one with speeds you are happy with.

There are over 130 to try.

Any server near me was slow as dirt. Nearest does not always equal faster.

Today, S. Korea was better for me. Yesterday, Sweden was better. Btw... I'm on the East Coast.

Well, it helped a little bit: goes up and down and peaks around 5Mbps but it should be >10 since I'm not doing anything else. I think it could be a DNS issue. I'll look further into it.

to be fair.. i JUST started getting this problem aswell.. seems like a punishment for using VPN while on steam it never used to do this for me till recently. GOG galaxy refuses to connect to their servers while connected to a vpn. same thing with dungeons and dragons online, even origin. my speed is 90 mps with my VPN ON. it seems like all the games and companies are punishing you for wanting to protect your computer/data from hacking or THEFT. how do we know steam has never been hacked? or origin or gog? everyone knows how many users these platforms have.. are we not allowed to be secure and HAVE GOOD speeds?? btw i to have speed 100 also. i mean in todays world you NEED to be allowed to be SECURE. to do anything else is just ASKING for trouble.. who knows if anyone is SPYING or HACKING through a platform like steam, gog, origin?? hiding stuff in packets or some other way or even connecting to your computer through some game?? there is something SINISTER about not being able to stay protected at the same time.

If your VPN provider is throttling certain web services or blocking them, take it up with your VPN provider.

How exactly would a VPN protect your data in case of Valve getting hacked? Do you actually believe that?

honestly i believe anything is possible
Not everything is possible. A VPN protecting your data in case of Valve getting hacked (or EA or whatever else company got your data) is impossible. A VPN protecting your computer from "hacking" is impossible.

Generally, unless you actually know what a certain technology does, assuming it to do all kinds of wonders, is foolish. Even more so when the claims about what it does stems from their marketing departments. Seen any of those NordVPN YT ads? Yeah, I have. And they are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. I mean, they are TECHNICALLY true, but effectively, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

is steam got hacked my VPN connection would not save me or my data unless i was connedcted to steam at the time the hack was going on. but seriously i dont really discount the things that are possible or may even seem impossible.
