What Happened to Duke Nukem 3D?
So I went on the store to purchase Duke Nukem 3D: The Megaton Edition and after searching it up, I couldn't find it anywhere besides find Duke Nukem Forever.

Did it get taken down?

“Devolver Digital’s distribution agreement for Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition has ended and the game is no longer for sale. All current owners get to keep the game, but the title will no longer be available for purchase through the PlayStation Network, Steam, Humble Store and other authorized digital distributors and Steam key vendors.
Following the end of our distribution agreement of Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition, Gearbox Software will take over publishing rights of the title.”

What it even on Steam in the first place? I'm pretty sure its a Gog.com game that you could go buy i guess, but at this point the game is total abandonware. Which means it can be downloaded for free from legit modding / fan sites no charge.

That's not what "abandonware" means. It's not legal.

That's a real shame. I'm hoping they'll bring it back soon enough. If anything, Duke Nukem Forever should have been the one getting temporarily taken down in my opinion.

Thanks for sharing this.

Dude its open source. The source code to the Duke Nukem 3D v1.5 executable, which uses the Build engine, was released as free software under the GPL on April 1, 2003. Its been free to download and mess with for years. Thats why there's 100 websites you can go and download the game at.

*facepalm* - that's not what open-source means, it literally means "the source code to the engine/game is open to use/modify", the game DATA, the actual maps/sounds files/textures etc. is still copyrighted, thus it is not free to download. Now if a game is released as freeware/public domain it means the game files (including all assets) are free to download, but you generally can't modify the game code. Duke Nukem 3D is not freeware.
