Check the logs folder in the Steam client for anything suspicious.
There have been more problems with 8BitDo controllers and Steam, incl. freezes; crashes; and lockups.

Wouldn't surprise me if unplugging the controller while Steam is running, isn't handled properly and causes part of the client to crash, taking the rest with it.

What mode is the controller in?
What connection type(s) do you experience the issue - USB/Bluetooth?

I had experienced Steam hanging when I disconnected my Pro 2 from Bluetooth and the controller was in 'A' /Mac mode (where it's emulating the DS4). I think that had been the only configuration that was resulting in the issue. Something is up with the current Steam client & beta.

A mode, and using Bluetooth

I had submitted a bug report here: https://steamcommunity.com/groups/SteamClientBeta/discussions/0/3546050190322877978/
Valve should address it at some point but you could add your experience if you wish.

For me its a hang in most cases. Things normally recovered when I didn't try to interact with the client after disconnecting the controller. After 3 or so seconds it would be shown as Not Responding but would often recover afterwards, sometimes ~15 seconds, other times felt like it was approaching the minute mark. If I clicked something/somewhere in Steam it wasn't as smooth a recovery, seemed more likely to end up not recovering or needing an extra click to (I don't know what's happening or how things work so guessing) get the client in a worse state where the OS knows to try and recover the Steam application??? :/

Mine just started doing this too after the most recent update. I'm playing with a Mac using a usb to a PS4 controller.

I have this same exact problem on Mac. It also doesn't recognize my controller in games anymore when I stream from PC. I can use it in Big Picture Mode to navigate, but not when playing.

Same for me. I hope Steam fixes this.

Send a support ticket if you haven't already. I just did. The more of us that bring it to their attention, the better.

That sounds like a good idea.

Hey guys, I'm also having this issue on a Mac, did you receive any answer from Steam support? I'm not sure if I should fill another ticket for this.

Steam support didn't really help. And yes, you should.

Mac, Dualshock 4 (Bluetooth)

Same – Steam crashes If the the DS4 is disconnected from bluetooth (e.g., the game's on pause for a few minutes or the battery dies). Submitted a support ticket and Steam customer service responded with a list of generic "reboot your computer" and/or "contact Sony" suggestions. PLEASE submit tickets so Steam takes this seriously and fixes this issue.

(Steam customer service asked me to create a report here, even after linking them to this discussion. So, here's some details to keep this issue active...)

ISSUE
Steam quits when controller disconnects

SPECIFIC TEST
Steam and Borderlands 2 both quit when Dualshock 4 is disconnected from Mac Bluetooth

OS
Mac 13

STEPS
(1) Open Steam and Borderlands 2
(2) Start playing Game
(3) DS4 Controller Disconnects from Bluetooth (To test/mimic connection loss from OS sleep or controller battery drain, I simply switched to the MacOS Finder and "disconnected" the DS4's from Bluetooth.)

RESULT
Steam and Game quit immediately

EXPECTED
Game to stay open (pause, alert, ...), but not crash.

OTHER GAMES
Disconnecting the DS4 from Bluetooth doesn't seem to be an issue with all games:
(A) LEGO MARVEL Super Heros 2: Crashed Steam, but left game open/playable and gave an appropriate "Controller Lost" error screen
(B) Metro Exodus: Left both Steam and game open, controller simply wasn't available anymore
