Visual Boy Advance + Steam Controller

I need help with my Steam Controller I got the other day.
When I launch VBA from Big Picture it does NOT recognize the controller regardless of me mapping the keys to the ones I use for the emulator.
I hear something about "changing your desktop bindings" but every thread I look at about it makes no sense to me. Like, I gotta do it in notepad but what wording do I use? Notepad code edits are very fickle.
Also, I'm not exactly a "tech expert" but I'm also not totally incompetant, so any help that's easy to understand but not patronizing or condescending would be nice!
