Trade or buy off the market. Once you go through the drops that's it, you won't get more unless it's got microtransactions and you spend $9 for each additional drop.

That is incorrect. After your "remaining card drops" counter has been reduced to '0' for that product, you will then randomly be gifted with packs of three trading cards for that specific Steam product. You don't have to be playing the Steam product to recieve these trading card packs, and there is no official time that you will recieve them either. You can learn more about Steam's Trading Card system by visiting this link: Steam Trading Card FAQ

This only applies to free-to-play games.

what about other games? I'm curious now.

For example a random game that you keep only for it's trading cards.

See Diamond Dafty's reply. You wait for booster packs, buy them off the market or trade for them.

oh so no way to get another round of "x card drops remaining", already knew about booster packs and trading / using market to get them.

Thought there was a way to get more card drops from 1 non-free2play game.

If memory serves, CS:GO does offer the F2P method of 1 drop for every $9US spent through the in-game store. I am unaware of any other non-F2P game that has a way to increase drops.

It does, I just checked my badge page. 1 per $9 spent in the in-game store.

Say for instance you sell one of the cards which drop, can you earn that open slot/card again via playing the game?

If you've gained all the card drops; you're not going to get any more.

You will then be eligible for booster packs.

I'm not quite sure how all of these work... for instance: Battlefleet Gothica. I got all the card drops, never got a booster pack? I don't think I ever have for getting all the card packs, and I only got 2 cards in total.

Free 2 Play games require you to spend money (buy prime or in game purchases like Operations) in order to receive drops.

I do not know how to get card drops on free-to-play games. But if you purchased a game on the Steam marketplace you'll be given (in most cases) half the number of cards in the set after playing for a specific amount of time. You can see if there are any more card drops in Profile>Badges, then look at the top right of the badge. You could be given doubles, or even triples, of the same card, so when you don't see half of them lit up don't get too upset. Getting all the cards you want right away is very unlikely.
Once you've gotten all of you're card drops there are three ways to get more cards: Trading, Buying, and Booster packs.

-Trading. If you want to get cards without paying more money, you can trade with your friends on Steam. If you go to Profile>Badges>(badge you want more cards for), and scroll down you'll find a list of cards you don't have. Some of them will even have an icon of your friends under them. If you select the rotating arrows you can start a trade offer with that friend for the card, giving whatever want in return (even nothing). You can use this method with friends who also own the same game to get more cards (or get cards for games you don't have).

-Buying. The simplest and easiest way is to buy them straight from the Steam marketplace. Going to the badge in question and scrolling down you'll find at the top of the list of missing cards there's a button that says, "Buy remaining cards on the Market" By clicking this it'll automatically make a Cart of the missing cards from you're set at the cheapest available price, at that moment. You can then purchase them (usually for a few cents) and craft the badge.

-Booster Packs. A Booster Pack is a pack of three cards you can randomly be assigned. To get one of these packs all you have to do is have already gotten all the card drops the game has given you, and sign in to Steam at least once a week. That's it. That's all you need to do. The only issue with this method is that it's super rare to get one. Most people don't get any, but it's a worthwhile effort to just sign in once a week, y'know, to keep the hopes up.

Anyway, that's how to get more cards with a purchased game on the Steam Store. Free games aren't something I've looked into, nor something I'm likely to get too deep in.
