Saving to boot drive #whyisn'ttheretechsupport
so did anybody else who boots off separate drive (ie. an SSD) notice that in december of 2015, steam stopped allowing files to save anywhere other then the C: drive on a computer. because all my games are installed to my E: drive, but all save game files or workshop items are now going to the C: drive, and are filling it up. id ask Tech Support, but Valve doesn't seem to believe in tech support.

Save game locations are determined by the developers of the game, not Valve/Steam. The usual location is the users "\my documents" folder which is stored, by default, in the users profile, which in turn is stored, by Windows default, on the system drive, which is usually C:. Google can give you plenty of tutorials about moving My documents elsewhere. This is not something that changed in december. This evolved since Windows '95.

Given my lack of experience with the workshop, I'll leave it to someone else to comment on that. It wouldn't surprise me though if the same system is at play.

You know, i thought the same thing, until i realised that all my steam games switched locations on the same day, despite them all being from different developers.

I'm aware of that. the games still install to the correct drive. its just up until 12/1/2015, all my games were were saving to the prefered drive. after that, they stopped saving there and instead saved to my c drive

Steam->Settings->Downloads->Steam Library Folders

Right click on drive

"Make Default Folder"

Problem solved

Steam -> Downloads -> Steam Library folders, that's where your games are managed.

As for savegames, they will always go to documents etc because that's where devs tell them to go. Not sure about workshop items but for many games mods go there too.

If that's an issue, move the user folder off your SSD.

Thats what im saying; there is a documents folder on my prefered drive, and up until december of last year thats where all my games were saving to. it just stopped going there and instead saved to my ssd. are you suggesting that simply cutting and pasting the user folder to the prefered drive would cause the save location to change?
Satoru Jun 16, 2016 @ 11:47pm
Again lets reiterate

Your GAMES are stored in whatever steam folder you decide

I have several Steam folders and they always point to the defalt drive selected

If yours isn't then just 'tap' the default folder to the C;\ then set it back to whever you want it ot

I've had my own setup for years and nothing 'changed' in December forcing things to go to my C:

Ah, that clears things up. Something you installed or reverted (system restore?) in December reset the location of My documents to its original location. Just follow one of the tutorials[www.google.nl] to properly move it back to your preferred drive and merge both the my documents folders and it should start saving there again.

There was no change in December that changed this. The logistics involved to redirect savegame locations of 6000+ games across multiple versions of Windows for little to no benefit means Valve would never undertake this. Nor would Valve mess with the products of third parties like this.

There's a flaw in your observation. Some games store their savegames in their installation folders. Most games store their savegames in a location in the windows user profile, usually my documents. Perhaps you, by chance, only observed the first before december, and the latter after december.
Ok, valid point. im looking at anything that saves in a document folder. and this applies to any game that does that that ive played before then and since

alright, i dont recall anything that would do that, but i'll look into that and see if that fixes it. thank you

Ok you seem to be confusing 'save games' which are where a particular game will store its save files, with where your games are INSTALLED which is where STeam installs games when you click "Install" in your library

Are you referring to Game Saves, like where your CIv5 save game on turn 300 would go

Or are you talking about the INSTALL drive, where Civ5 the game itself is installed

What Washell said. This is a windows problem, not a Steam problem. The location of your Documents folder is something that's handled in Windows, not by Steam.
Satoru Jun 16, 2016 @ 11:57pm
Note that "My Documents" is a SPECIAL folder taht you can't just 'move' around

You actually have to right click "My documnent" and explicitly point it to the correct place
