1 unread chat message (Solved)

For two days now, I've had 1 unread chat message. Upon clicking it, I open a chat window with [unknown] with no avatar and not a single message in the chat. The unread message notification remains.

When I click the avatar, it brings me to a profile which is private.

How do I get rid of this? Is there a way to forcefully clear unread messages?

The green envelope should be gone.

You can also read those messages if you want and also the green envelope will be gone by doing this : - first select that unread chat message when you first open the steam, after that from the chat window , block that profile by right clicking on the unknown avatar . Now logout from the steam browser by selecting change user and then login again . Now again select that unread chat message, it will say you have to unblock them first. Do so . And whoila ! you can actually read those messages with green envelope gone. It worked for me and i hope it helps.
