Steam Guard requires what?

Dear Steam,

I don't use steam guard. I deliberately choose not to use it, because I am sick and tired of all of the sites all over the internet with mandatory two-step authentication. All of them have a button that turns it off, and yet I still have to log in with my phone or email or, most annoyingly, yet another authentication app (none of which are compatible with each other, so I have to have each and every one uploaded to my phone) requiring yet another pin code that is only valid for x amount of time. And so I very specifically DO NOT WANT steam guard to be on.

Yet after a brief hiatus since I last used steam, I log in to find that Steam Guard has been activated and that I have to check my email, my phone, etc. to log in to Steam, and then to turn the bloody thing off, I have to do it all again. How? Why did this happen? Did Steam decide to force Steam Guard on me without my permission? Isn't that the whole point of having used the opt-out switch, is because I DON'T want' it? So why was it on?

Or was it because of some update, that Steam decided that absolutely anyone who doesn't have steam guard turned on will find it automatically turned on in the latest update? What other settings do I need to go back and undo, because of the update, then?

You do need Steam Guard. You can thank people's stupidity that they fall for common scams.

You can disable guard completely (mobile app and email) but it will prevent you from doing certain things like, using the Market, trading and even posting on the forums just like you are doing now.

Most 2fa only require one app for all of them.
When i see 2fa is available, i use it. So i know that for a fact.

I dont use steam guard app, for other reasons. But in principle 2fa is good. Just make sure you keep the setup code, or have backup codes.

OP's question was why Steamguard was enabled by itself while he had disabled it in the past.

Since it is very unlikely that you will find another person who is not using 2FA you will probably just get guesses as answers. My guess is that the recent update to the login front-end (one touch authentication, QR login) caused this issue for you and that it will not be recurring.

Finally, I am not going to preach about the benefits of 2FA... we all know them. I just hope you are one of those guys that are very careful with their data and browsing habits if you're not going to use it.

In normal usage scenarios 2fa is not more than a second password.
